Hey guys

i was looking at foxtel packages on the net, and never realised how ridiculously expensive it was. I thought the sports channels would be included in the basic package but apparently they arent. 39.95 for 20 channels.....18 of which i wouldnt even watch. and then i gotta pay like another 17 bucks for sport channels and 15 for movies....u end up paying like 100 bucks a month. I always thought it was around 40 or so and ud get sport and crap included....is there something im not understanding? or is that seriously how much it costs? is there any deals and stuff you can do for it to be cheaper? or bundling the package etc....this is not for HD foxtel or foxtel IQ just standard foxtel. just curious if neone knows anything about it coz all my mates can tell me is "i have foxtel", "oh yeah how much do u pay", "uhh....i have foxtel" so they are useless.

any help would be appreciated. cheers guys

I don't have foxtel, but from researching it a few months back thats how much it seems to cost. A few of my friends have it and they pay around $60 a month for it.

Have a look at www.selectv.com.au, see if they have anything that interests you

I don't have it - but mum and dad and my sister and brother inlaw as well as my grandparents all have it.

I know they are all paying in excess of $70 per month none of them have all the channels (they all have slightly different packages)
I looked into it when i was deciding between payTV and internet and I was looking at about $80 for the package i wanted (which included no addon sports - not a sports fan) I decided that the net was a better deal for me for the time being. I do plan on getting foxtel eventually - just not till i get a decent TV

There is selectTV which is pretty crap but its cheaper and it might suit you if your after sports channels I looked at it briefly but it didnt come close to what i wanted - but its still another option.

At the moment $10 dvd's from BigW and Kmart are a better investment for me than foxtel

Looks like you've understood it pretty well .... there is nothing cheap about foxtel!

You start off with the basic package for $37:95 per month and then add other packages on top of that depending on what you want.

We have the platinum package (yes it's f***ing expensive) and have just upgraded to the HD IQ2 box last week which costs us another $25 on top of the cost of the platinum package.

Though I must say I'm liking all these programs in HD .... the picture quality is simply stunning!
Having foxtel cable gives us all the free to air channels as well as all the foxtel ones, including all the free to air HD channels

And this IQ2 PVR is a cracker .... twin High Def tuners, 320 Gb Hard drive so I can record two programs at once while watching another program at the same time.

It's a very good system .... but definately not cheap sad.gif

The better half is currently looking at switching over from standard to HD Foxtel,as currently they have a free install deal etc etc.
We only got it due to Channel 10 picking up the World Superbike rights but decided not to show it.... mad.gif
Price wise it looked the same for the package to go over to HDFoxtel from the standard.......but but but I dont think my 68cm POS TV will really be worth viewing HD on!
Just saving up for a LG LCD...........mmmmmmmmmmmm LCD! mad.gif

I personally don't see the point. I had foxtel on a 12 month contract going back about 4 years ago, and it was the biggest let down ever. Its depends on how much tv you watch, but for me, out of a dozen or so channels I really only watched 2 or 3 that had programming that interested me, so i was paying 40bux a month (2004 i think) for what?

$60 p/month x 12 months = nice sq amp wink.gif

We've got foxtel at home, same as seirra, platinum with 4 IQ boxes. I think its 110 for platinum with one iq box then 25 for each additional box. so its 185 for us a month. With every channel you've always got something to watch and with 4 iq boxes you can record just about every good show thats on. Looking at HD but still waiting for 2 of the 4 tv's to be upgraded to be able to use it on all of them. Foxtel is not cheap...

cheers for the help guys. yeah i faced the same option of good internet or foxtel, and internet was more important. i was just curious about foxtel prices and it was ridiculous. i just wish they offered, where a package could be your choice of like 5,10,15 channels etc. so u could just take a couple. coz lifestyle, and all that crap really doesnt interest me. and yeah buying tv shows on dvd seems to be the better investment. cheers for everything guys

I'd get foxtel if it was about $30 per month for 2 channels Lifestyle food - and what ever channel grand designs is on (f**k that show is awesome!) I simply dont watch any other stations other than the occasional flick to the cartoons on a saturday but even then thats just cause its there. If i didnt have the other channels I wouldnt miss them.

Personally I think its a rip that you have to pay extra for HD content.

The PVRs my understanding is that they erase what you have recorded after you watch it too so you only get to watch it once. I could be wrong on that though

Oh and apparently the adults only channels are crap - what a let down

Foxtel isn't for everyone, depends on how much TV you watch.
Food channel is great tongue.gif so is Discovery, National Geographic, etc.
Kirk .... as you're in the industy you would find a program called "Megastructures" very interesting .... as the title implies it's all about heavy fabrications, structures etc ..... awsome stuff to be seen.

The PVR doesn't erase anything after you've watched it .... you can keep recorded programs indefinately if you like. (as long as you have space on the hard drive)

There could be one exception with recording box office moves that you buy.
After you've bought a box office movie you have 48hours to watch it, or watch it as many times as you want in that time period.
If you record it instead of watching it straight away there may be an auto erase time limit after you've watched it.
Might have to test that out.

Oh .... and the adults only channel is just soft core stuff .... so no point .... you see just as much watching something like naked wild on tongue.gif

How does that work? Normally, you'd need 3 tuners to record 2 channels and watch a third channel.

I also looked into Foxtel and found i'd want the sports package as extra and others in my house wanted lifestyle stuff, it ended up being too much to be worth it to watch a few games of footy per week.

Softcore pffft
My DVD collection puts them to shame LOL

But you could be right about the Box office thing - that actually makes sence.

Can you upgrade the HDD? if its SATA surely an external carrier with a couple of terrabytes of storage via e-SATA would be possible? if not even 1TB PATA or SATA would be more than enough

Stone have you looked to see what other satelite options there are for getting the footy?
XHELL
You do know Grand Designs is on free to air.

I had fox, I had the sports negotiated in, $38 basic + sports, told 'em, sports for that price or no deal.

it is now - didnt used to be

You can record from 2 channels while watching foxtel's "On Demand" programming via a 3rd tuner.
The thing actually has 4 HD tuners built in .... the fourth is reserved for "future enhancements"

I'm not sure if you can upgrade the hard drive .... however it does have additional connections on the back for e-sata, ethernet and usb .... again these are reserved for "future enhancements" so it looks like this thing has got a fair bit of potential.

That makes more sense good.gif
