But everyone has their preferences based on what has/hasn't worked for them.
I personally used an Alpine, but only after a Pioneer (skipped) and a JVC, the IR sensor for the remote shat itself on the unit after a bit of abuse, rendering half the remote dead and more importantly the pause button.
car wasn't even that loud.

Alpine all the way - remotes have good response and volume scroll is very quick up and down. wouldn't use anything else personally.

my experience:
Clarion doesn't like voltage drops, and remote won't work through tinted windows.
Pioneer isn't too bad when it works, but really hates voltage drops. Tints ok
Alpine is fine with tints and voltage drops are ok for the most.
my vote Alpine

Alpine may have pause buttons, but my 9886 skips at around 144-145. Otherwise its excellent.
Pioneer has pause too, but the scroll is slow and too many volume levels 1-62. Didnt skip out at 141.

Don't muck about. You need a CD changer for Street class above 150dB.
They're under $250 these days.
Kenwood gets my vote.

have always used a cd stacker with my Alpine 9830 - never skipped a beat, nor did it skip in Georges St A mirage doing over 151.

Ditto, my 9887 starts to skip on certain songs, on cd.
I normally run ipod so that fixes that problem

not that they make them anymore.
but my CDXM-850MP Sony headunit served me well for SPL owned it now for 5 years. it never skipped in the car until i hit over the 156dB mark then it was removed and used externally, but it sure did take a pounding in the car without skipping
.
but as said they dont make them anymore and IMO they were the best head unit sony ever sold before going down the road of cheap crappy headunits.
but apart from that SONY is all i have ever used and been happy with it.
in margs 626 we had a alpine 9851, we had it upto 148.5 and it neva skipped a beat, now we have an iva 105 doing 146.6 and it doesnt skip either

They use headunits in SPL ???? I thought it was all about how big your box was and how many cones you have..........

The more cones you have, the higher you get.

lol @ where this thread is going....
I just bought a Pioneer head unit and has most of what I need. Previous unit was an Alpine 9857 and that was pretty good, however my Eclipse 5425 was the best deck I ever owned. I did go through four that year though on warranty returns.

you can also get pretty high with just a small box and a couple of cones....

i loved my old pioneer, it was indestructable and had a good pause and was a huge button on the remote! good for stupid clumsy fingers like mine
but i think for anything at 150 and over a changer is a must
just one cone can get you pretty high if its big enough but you do need big box

Never used a CD-changer with my Sony CDX C90r, and it never skipped once, even at over 158dB
