Full Version: Installing more RAM turns off my Wireless Adapter

Hi,

Here is my current setup:

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600
2Gb RAM (2 x 1Gb) DDR2 240-PIN
ASUS P5K Motherboard
Windows Vista (SP1)

I bought another 2 x 1Gb RAM (the sales guy at CPL had my current config on file, so I am assuming he sold me the right RAM).

When I installed the RAM, the PC picked up that yes, I did now have 4Gb of RAM. Sweet. Or so I thought.

When I then went into my profile, my PC would detect that I had a wireless adapter (NETGEAR WG311v3 54Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter) but it would not "start".

I turned the PC off, removed the new RAM, and low and behold - my wireless adapter would work!

Any ideas??? I'm stumped!

gotta love vista - I assume is Vista 32? or 64?.

I know XP (32-bit) has a memory limit of 4GB, Vista32 may be the same. but it's likely you need to update the driver for the wireless. sometimes they have a routine to detect memory available on startup, and may not recognise that 4GB is more than 2GB...

also remember that video RAM is counted in total memory calculation, so now you have maybe 4.5GB or such (assuming a 512MB graphics card)

It's the 32 bit version.

Have downloaded what I think may be an updated driver for the wireless card...will see how that goes...

Damn technology....SHEEESH!!!!

Ok, just tried to install 1 of the 1Gb sticks....still gives me the same issue of the wireless adapter turning off....

An on board video card isn’t always included in total system memory. You’re just showing your age dude. wink.gif

However I am in agreement that drivers should fix the problem. BUT to make sure the hardware is spot on, nidekcus can you list each stick of RAM you have for your PC? It'll be something like: 1Gb DDR1 400Mhz PC3200. Once that’s 100%, we can move onto your problem @ hand. (Can't always trust computer salesmen)

Have you installed the two sticks into each of the respective dual channel slots?

IE: The 2 that you got with the computer are in green slots and the 2 you bought after in the red slots (Colours may be different on your mobo, but you get the idea)

There could be a conflicting issue with the ram sticks not being sycned and it confusing the cpu.

There are 4 slots. The original RAM is in slot 1 and slot 3, so I went to put the new RAM in slot 2 and 4. Problems. The I tried to put the original RAM in slot 1 and 2, new RAM in 3 and 4. Same problems.

I came across on Google someone that had a similar issue, and the advice to them was to update the BIOS. I might give this a crack...so if u don't hear from me for a while...PC is DEAD!!!

If i remember rightly 32bit windows only shows 3.5gb or so. I would go 64bit if i was you and if your using ultimate i think you can get a 64bit version for free from MS. Try puting the bios file on a flash drive and doing it thrue your bios as windows bios update isn't the most stable. Have you tried tacking the wirless card out and start the pc. Then turn off the pc put the card in a start it again and install it etc. Or even change the slot if you have another PCI slot free.

video cards and onboard memory are included.

a 32-bit processor uses 32 bits to refer to the location of each byte of memory. 2^32 = 4.2 billion, which means a memory address that's 32 bits long can only refer to 4.2 billion unique locations (i.e. 4 GB).
the 64bit version of windows can have up to 128gig of ram.

I'm not sure if I can upgrade to 64-bit or not..... sad.gif
