hey ppl
Im looking to put a nice system in my little hatch... car is too small and i cant spare the room for a sub so ill be going with an amped set of components only. Course the front doors will be deadened, but just wondering your opinion on what the best components I can get for this price range considering i wont be running a dedicated sub? this is SQ so thats what i want from them, so something with a sweet bass/mid driver and natural tweeter is my ideal biggrin.gif

what car, what r the stock front speaker sizes (and where are they located), how much are u willing to put into installation (either effort/skill from urself, or $$ to get a pro to install)??

cars a mazda 2, unconfirmed but the doors are pretty big as are the existing speaker holes, should fit in a 6.5" easy. tbh i have NFI where the tweeter is, thats the only bit im worried about fitting, but hopefully there's room. no installing from me, i'll get a shopto do it for sure.

Have a look if you can fit 3 way splits...
That was you could have deeper bass, and well as nice highs and lows.

It'll all depend on your budget.

Boston Pro60's hammer quite well in a sealed and deadened door. The tweeters are a bit of personal preference though.

Also consider Rainbow (Kick version's), they are renowned for their pretty intense mid-bass. (I am unaware of the pricing structure of Rainbow however or which model would suit your budget)

I think if you ask around you will find many people have been impressed with the Hertz HSK165 splits, they have excellent midbass especially if you deaden the doors.
KIRBO
IMO. Unless you go 3-way you need a sub. End of story.
jas
jlaudio c5-650s they are very good.

Another vote for 3 ways. The bigger your mid bass the better, 8 or 9 inch would cover your sub freq very well. Although a 7 is still better than a 6.5 splits.

Even with an 8 or a 9 you should still go a sub if you can afford it.

Edit** I reread the OP an 8 or a 9 would have you covered down low with no sub, but what 8/9 kits are there below 600? I agree with the hertz recommendations they have plenty of mid-bass kick.

anyone that is sugesting a 3 way setup for under $600 needs a frontal lobotomy!!!

The HSK's are good for midbass, there are quite a few speakers out there that will give you the midbass you want.

Peerless PPB 8" midbass = $220
Peerless 830870 4" midrange = $160
vifa xt25's = $130

Still leaves you change out of $600 to spend on MDF and beer wink.gif

didn't you used to use the xt25's, Fudd?

Hertz HSK 163? RRP $566. Although I can't tell you how they sound. FHRX have them on their specials page for $450 ex-demo.

These were my choice. Haven't got them in my car yet, but they sounded pretty good in the car I heard them in.

MattVIP - crossovers? Six channels to run them off? $$$ soon adds up quickly tongue.gif

meh.

just run them all full range. They're home audio drivers, they know what to do.... laugh.gif

My vote is for the Digital Designs 400Wrms DDW6.5set

A great set and at the rrp of $599 well within your budget.

haha and again, reason for a frontal tongue.gif

just need another $1200 to build some decent passives to go with it smile.gif

and yeah, the xt25's were porn! miss the lil buggers.

Pretty much unbeatable options, but the problem on that budget is:

* 6 Channel amp to run them (good 6 channel amps are expensive!)
* Head unit with active crossovers (most amps won't have sufficient crossovers)

Running full range is fine for the lower frequencies of the midbass, but when it comes to higher frequencies having three different speakers all playing >200hz would = audio disaster. You'd really need active crossovers (or a custom passive) to make it work.

That said if you could make it work, it would kill almost anything smile.gif

even if you go for a small single 8" sub in the boot, small custom F/G box moulded somwere in the corner, or small shallow 8" sub under the seat paired up with a simple 2way component set, it will crank.

I got a 05 Corolla which is also a 'small car' not as small as yours, but i put in 2 x 8" subs and still i saved all the space i need.
