ok so on the way from maryborough to ballarat i got pulled over and got a fine for (having fog lights on when there was no fog) it was a $119 fine thought it was a bit steep considering i thought they were driving lights not fog lights as they are white light not yellow or orange even tho i explaned this they still didnt give me a warning just a straight up fine.
i dont see how it is a safety issue as they dont affect other drivers (most cars around these days have them) and they do give better vision down low on the road and to the sides of the car

i was p!$ed

anyways this sparked an idea of a convisation topic!!!
how can we get rid of stupid laws that are just there to raise revenue and coz some police are just aragent and on a power trip

anyways just my 2c
~Spyne~
if u read the manual, it says not to have the fog lights on if there is a. no fog, and/or b. its raining
i agree it's sorta a stupid law, but i'm sure there are reasons for it, just as there are for other 'stupid' laws.
and i dont really think this is a revenue raising law, certainly not something that people would be pulled up for often

sorry brian (plus, i prefer to defend cops - my old man's one, and without them, we'd all be screwed....although i agree there are some who are definitely out there on power trips)

I was lucky with the driving light on my Celica. I had them hooked up on the same circuit as the parkers, so i was lucky to talk them around and convincing mr police man they were really bright parkers!.....only had a warning! woohoo

I had one special mr police man once, he pulled me over for going a bit quick...."pop the bonnet driver", so up she went, his torch went straight for the turbo, then the pod filter and then to the intercooler ( by this stage iam thinking, he knows what he is on about and started to poo myself as I didn't have it engineered just yet). Then he pointed his light to the NOS nozzle and solenoids (big poo) "open the boot son!" was the next request, so i slowly opened the boot knowing full well what was inside, he past his light over the large bright blue NOS bottle with the gauge reading half and a nice layer of sweat all over the bottle ( I just just come from a street run and had the bottle still hooked up and it was sweating from the use).

Then without warning mr police man stated in all his glory "I can defect you right now, son!"

I replyed with "whys thats sir?"

mr police man then proudly pointed at my number plate and said " Your car runs on LPG and you don't have the sticker on YOUR NUMBER PLATE!"

I stood there shocked, took me a few seconds for the above statement to register.....

I replyed with " Ill get that sorted tomorrow sir"

then we went our separate ways with out an exchange of paperwork!

to this day, the strangest police incident that could of went down an expensive road!

Cheers

The reason for the fog light law is because they aim low and will reflect off the road in some circumstances (wet road, mainly) and blind oncoming drivers. When there is fog, this reflection is blocked by the fog. Obviously during the day in the dry, it probably isn't a problem but making the law fog lights only during fog make it much more simple for dopey police to understand.

I'm adding driving lights to my car, simply because my headlights are so sh!t that I can't see a thing at night, especially not when its raining.

they will be used every single night that I'm driving, and if a cop gives me a fine for it, I'll take it to court.

......and when they're on the rear fog light(s) is/are also on, so it blinds people behind you.

The problem is most ignorant "fog light lovers" probably don't even know that they're on in the first place. How many Excels have you followed at night with the bloody fog lamp dazzling you?

VY commo or Prado (the ones I see morst) drivers with only parkers and *poorly aimed* foggies on at night. Headlights? what are they? rolleyes.gif

Barrels of fun being dazzled by some loser who can't work out how to use headlights vs foglights. I only use foggies on freeways, they are little use around town.

Holy crap that is the funniest story I've heard in a LONG time SPL_dynamics.

Brian if you think that sucks you wanna hear some of my stories about being bent over by cops - Dan (broadz) has also copped the unlubed 14" rod up the date as well.

Admittedly foglights being used as driving lights I have no issues with - my biggest gripe is with people who drive with their lights on in the day (which I do) leaving their highbeam on. Or with non-legal HID's or miss-aligned lights.
I probably would have gone the daylight running lights spiel.

your foglights might need adjusting.

they are useless on the freeway, and extremely useful around the suburbs, as they light up a fair bit to the sides of the car, so you can see animals, or pedestrians that might be walking at night.

they are also helpful in finding house numbers at night.

I normally drive with headlights, and "fog lights" on, and never use high beams, even on country roads.

you cant turn the fog light off in my statesman, got done for it in my old vt but

my main problem is with people who have driving lights that arent aligned and blind every body coming their way. even with headlights it craps me. not that hard people. i really cant see the problem if everyone had thiers aligned properly and only used them when needed there would be no reason to have this law. cause of the f***wits out there that dont, we have it. screwed everyone.
end rant

If your headlights are so bad that you need additional "driving lights" then it's time to trash your sh!tbox and get a new car (or a seeing eye dog). smile.gif

Pulse-R
poorly aligned headlights annoy me.
Fog lights are illegal unless there's fog.

what I hate is when the cops pull you over because they don't know the road rules. And then get all indignant when you let them know they're wrong. I've been waiting almost 6 months now for a fine which I was to expect in the mail in two weeks "after they go back and take another look at the intersection" where I apparently infringed a give-way sign, and they didn't think that 'Keep Clear' on the road should apply to them...

bahaha

I hate AU Falcon headlights... Constantly blinding me in my rearview mirror angry.gif

DD Phil - DEFINATELY agree about the stupid rear foglight on excels!!! And stone, YES!!! WHAT THE FCK is it with bloody AU falcons!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Anyway, back on topic - best cop story I have was when I was driving back from sunday arvo shopping with my at the time girlfriend. We pulled up at a boozbus, and I'd just been drinking a bottle of Ribena. The cop, who would have been about my age, said

"Have you had anything to drink today"

"Nah, unless you count Ribena"

At this point he stopped, and got all serious like, and said "Oh... Ribena gives a high reading all the time..." I started umming and ahhing and mumbling about how I didn't know blah blah blah. He looked at me for a second, then started laughing and said "No, I'm only kidding". My girlfriend was in hysterics, and I was very red faced as we drove off tongue.gif
~Spyne~
oh poor timmeh....i saw that coming a mile away. alot of cops love using that one, especially with all the rumours about breath mints, cheery ripes, etc supposedly giving false readings

Jags are the same. I remember looking at one of my Dad's. The headlight switch went: parker -full - fog front - fog front/rear.

I'd bet bet 99.9% of owners just jump in and twist the dial fully clockwise, without a care in the world.......

spl, thats a killer story! biggrin.gif

maybe i should sort out nos one day to run in my celica (for the half a second it'd last) so that it finally kicks the bucket, ugh.

I have noticed that one a few times on the road with excels! tongue.gif

I've been pulled over by good and bad cops like everyone else but one time I remember that was a bit funny was when I had my LJ torana and he said my rear tyre clearance wasn't enough (which it wasn't) and then he went on to say 'that's why they had the flares on these models...' Couldn't be bothered correcting him that it was the later LH and LX toranas that were half as big again as my LJ! laugh.gif
