Hey I'm looking at buying either an ps3 or an xbox360, but cant decide which. I've been looking more closely at the xbox360's because they are so much cheaper for the same range of games, but all Ive heard about them is the RED LIGHT issue they have that pretty much means ur f*cked.
Can anyone tell me which is the better option based on their own experiences and performance of both machines?
Also if neone is keen to sell a working ps3 second hand i may be interested, seeing as i dont wanna spend 800 bucks or wateva they are in the shops.
thanks guys

I dont know anyone personally that has had a red light issue - with both hacked and original xbox 360s
I think so long as you give them space for sufficient cooling, and/or buy a cheap add-on fan for the back of the xbox it is fine.
But the problem may be solved on the modern models anyway - MS would have fixed it by now.
If you have a HD tv then the ps3's blu ray movie player is very handy. If you like to "backup" your games *insert disclaimer for MEA not endorsing piracy* then the xbox is the much better easier option I believe.

My brother had a 360 with the extra fan and it got the red light. Then he got a new one under warrenty and it runs alot cooler (feeling back of fan). The reason you ask? The updated model has the falcon cpu which is 65nm not 80nm or watever the original one was. Just like with PC cpu's the smaller the chip is the less power it uses thus less heat making them last longer. There is another model coming out again near Xmas-early 2009 with a 45nm cpu. I haven't heard anything about the current new 65nm model so i say go for the 360 the problems seem ironed out and my bro's never freezes etc like the original did.

There are very few console specific games, so you need to decide what you want? Online play, the 360 for the moment is slightly infront (IMO), as their 'dashboard' is a bit more user friendly to work with. Is online play essential to you? If so, what do your friends use? I'd go whichever your mates use the most, that way you can game with your mates rather then just some random people, at least that way you know at least some of them won't be 9 year old idiots.
What about the controller? The layouts for both are slightly different, and the 360's controller is bulkier as well. I prefer the PS3's controller, but it's all personal preference really.
If you want to be able to play Blu-Ray's then the PS3 is the way to go, without going to a standalone model. The internal hdd of the PS3 is simple to upgrade, and doesn't void the warranty, though the wireless card seems to be a bit on the poor side, some have trouble and others don't. Though for gaming, you want a wired LAN connection anyway really.

cheers for the replies guys. its a hard decision aye.
i dont care about online play or blu ray. because i dont wanna spend 50 bucks on blu ray dvds lol. but ive grown up on playstations so i prefer the controller to anything else. i used to own an xbox as well and sold it in 6 months coz of the annoying controls. but the 360 controller doesnt seem as bulky as the old xbox.
i see positive and negatives in both lol. ps3 seems to suit me the best, but not for the price. xbox the price suits me. but its all new to me. (eg: buying a samsung phone when uve only used nokia) i might hold out till xmas and see if the price comes down. If neone else has any opinions, keep em coming
cheers

I was going through this awhile ago, ended up with a 360 for the controller, price and DVD's instead of blu-ray. Mine is sitting underneath my bed on its side with a ducted heater hole about a metre away and stays very cool even after 12 hours of use. It's been modded to play back-ups and not to overheat, with life-time warranty on the chip, and 3 years on the console. The majority of mates have a PS3, so I got to play with both, I prefer the box.

yeh i was originally a PS boy, but then turned to the original xbox, and since the 360.
quite happy with mine, 12 months on no problems *touch wood* (other than it being loud as all fu(k when playing a game)
as previously mentioned, the RROD isn't as likely with the current (/newer) models of the 360; with the heating issues being seen to. (don't forget microsoft cost themselves X millions of dollars to extend the warranty and fix the RROD problem).
i like the xbox, the only thing i miss is Tekken and GT.
btw, the 360 controllers are the same as the type-s (or whateva the fu(k they were) controllers for the xbox. whereas the PS3 controllers seem to be pretty much a newer generation of the old ones

yes, maybe a 360 biased opinion, but you asked for it. (price and game range were my major concerns before i bought)

I've just bought a 360 and it awesome. execpt as said it's super loud, sounds like a jet widning up when you put a disc in. they've also just had another price drop the preimum can be had for less than $500 with a game now.

does the new 80gb ps3 have backwards compatibility? ive heard that the recent models dont have it, but when ppl have put in ps2 games they have worked....but yeah im not sure? has anyone tested a newer model ps3 that doesnt have backwards compatibility to see if ps2 games do in fact work?

Get the new 80gb PS3, they will be retailing around $699. The 40gb is $678/$679 at DSE/JB. I've played both consoles and i definetly prefer the ps3 controls.
But i'd wait till x-mas, price might go down.
Also, blu-ray movies are only 30-40 now days, and will get cheaper down the track.

I dont think the new 80gb models have backwards compatibility. Though dont quote me on that.

Nah they don't the 40gb's did but then they changed it with the 60gb and i doubt the 80gb will be any different.

Sony removed backward capability in order to make it cheaper to buy. I guess they figured most people already have the old console (basically worthless anyway) so there was no need and besides, emulated PS1 on PS2 was crap anyway.
I just got my free PS3 with Sony Bravia LCD i just bought.
a couple of annoying things to know:
The "new" controllers are annoying for gran turismo as the L2 + R2 (gear up or down) are now larger progessive analogue buttons and have lost their digital "click" After hours of playing I now pefer driving automatic.
PS2 controllers cannot be used with PS3 without a special adaptor and Guitar Hero guitars need an even more specialised adaptor for it to work.

If you're buying it for gaming and dont care about blue ray, get the 360.
The 360 usually has a larger range of games and the really good games are available on both consoles.
Both play much the same - the graphics are fairly equal. Why pay more for the PS3 ?

I suppose im a bit biased because i just bought an 80gb ps3. But there are rumors that Microsoft will release a new xbox in just under a year, I would be pissed if i just bought a 360 and then found it it was out dated so quickly.

The only thing i heard was that the 360's will be getting a new CPU. But i'd be glad to see a new console but im probably goin to buy a 360 with HDMi to hook up to my PC screen and put it in a Lian-Li XB01 case.
