I'm looking at improving the low end response of my car, without losing too much boot space/power. I'm going for a IB setup in my rear shelf and plenty of sound deadening. I've narrowed my options down to Kicker 04SSMB8 or 08CVT65. The reason - my fronts are Kicker and I get all Kicker gear for quite cheap.
My first choice was the 8" drivers (being larger), but as they are designed for midbass, I'm worried they won't go as low as I would like. The 6.5" would go straight in, but then I'm worried they aren't sufficiently big enough to go low.
Either setup would see about 400wRMS available between the speakers.
What are your opinions? I don't necessarily want something that's going to extremely loud and doofy (I mainly listen to metal, so huge subs in ported boxes are pointless for me) and I don't want to lose any boot space.

you would probably want to go at least an 8, preferably a 10 I would say... 6.6 inch drivers are good for midbass, but generally dont go very low. There are some 6 (or 6.5, cant remember) subs, and they sound good, but not IB. There are 10 and 12 inch subs that fit in quite small boxes - and your music is going to generally have more punchy bass.

Having said all that. I listen to Lamb of God, and run a 12 inch Alpine. I wouldn't change it for the WORLD - some of the low end bass hits that give so much impact would be lost if it didn't go as low as it does....

I had a look today, there's no way in hell I'm getting anything bigger than 6.5" in there

There isn't physically enough room to fit 8" speakers in there without destroying the baby seat attachment points (which I'm sure is fairly illegal). Apart from that, the twin bars that are attached to my boot are going to be smack bang right in the middle of anything deeper than what I've got in there at the moment (Hertz HSK 6.5", one with a sheared cone).

So 6.5" dia, and not much more then he depth of the HSK's which is 72mm, thats tough.

What about your doors? See if you can get the 6.5 in your kicks and put a pair of 8 or 9 inch midbass in your doors and tune them low.

There's a reason IB fell out of favour. It sucks...

Buy a 10-inch subwoofer that suits a small box (as little as 15-litres) and use that. If you need room for baby junk pull the box out now and then, or get smaller baby junk...

Without doing some crazy custom work, I can't get anything bigger than I have now (6.5") in the doors in diameter.
I have however found a solution for my rear shelf - if I convert my boot to use gas struts, I can cut those bars out and gain unlimited depth
A guy at work said he's put 8" subs in the shelf of a car the same as mine, but had to cut the baby seat bolts out. I do not want to do this. I might try the 6.5" subs and box them (if those bars are gone, boxing them would be quite easy).

have you considered taking the speakers in the rear shelf out, leaving the grills in place and putting a real sub in the boot?
