Hey guys, just wanted to share the hobby that has kept me out of the car audio loop for the last 5 years or so.
I now have a trailer for transporting these planes so I can put a decent system back in my car!!
Looking to combine flying these beasts to some awesome tunes, then I can combine two great hobbies!!

To reference how big these models are I am the fat bloke and I am 6'2 tall.......

Enjoy the pics.

These days flight sims help get people up to speed with new manouvers before trying it on a real model.
I have only totalled one model in five years (touch wood) thankfully it was a cheapy practise one.

My model is at the high end of the spectrum, obviously you dont start there you get a small trainer type first and work your way up.

Heres some vids of what they can do.

1st one is me flying to music I am only 'reasonable' coompared to some of the pro's.

2nd one is a young fella from QLD, he is awesome and makes me look very basic! This guys is the best we hav ein Australia.

Nice setup mate, I flew model planes for about 7 years and when I got out the large 30% competition aerobatic aircraft (it's 30 isn't it) were just starting to come into Australia, although they had been flying them in the states for a few years. I had a few fun fly type aircraft, 2 float planes and a Dualist twin running 46's, I've still got most of it though most of the aircraft are a bit beaten up from being knocked around here and there whilst in storage.

G'day luke... 30% is small these days... just like my Alpine 2channel amp bridged for 340W RMS LOL!

Its a 42% scale Extra 330.

157cc twin cylinder petrol motor (approx 20 hp), has electornic ignition system. I am looking at upgrading to a 170cc, 210 cc is starting to get around these days as well!

Requires 10 to 12 servos that are capable of 25kg/cm of torque.

You need a very robust electircal system to run these things. I have about 10 amp hours at 8 volts on board!!

On board redundant power distribution system incorporating a voltage regulator, the equpiment runs on 6 volts hence the need for regulator. The system can experience spikes in current draw of up 25 or 30 amps when doing hard manouvering.

Then there is the advancement in radio technology!! We have moved into spread spectrum radios, computer controlled and completely programmable transmitters, here is pictur eof the transmitter I use....... 2500 bucks right there alone!

So yeah a lot has changed in the last 5 years or so.......

that is so freaking awesome!!!

I see you live in the Hunter Valley, my old club was at Metford just off the highway near East Maitland, most nice sunny Saturdays and Sundays you will see some action there.

If your lucky the Jet Jockeys will be up from Sydney, those things are awesome if your into speed. True turbine powered models sucking Kero and going in excess of 350 kph!

Heres some pictures from a Jet day at Metford......

The Hornet is probably 18k worth... was crashed earlier this year sad.gif

That is awesome stuff! Those planes may be the coolest things I've ever seen. yahoo.gif

I bow to the money, time and skill a hobby like this takes.

I used to race RC cars way back in my youth when a Team Associated RC10 was the shiznit.
Models like these planes just make me laugh about the 1/10th scale cars we thought were so great.
Mere childrens toys.

I would love to get into a hobby like this but
1) couldn't afford it
2) would crash a lot. I just know it. biggrin.gif

Nice setup indeed, it was about 5-6 years ago that I left the hobby, it may have been larger the 30% I can't honestly remember to tell the truth, that electrical system I do remember it was becoming more common place for the pattern and pylon boys to run a 5 batery in there receiver packs so as to boost voltage but were talking about more normal sized aircraft there aswell, 8V/6V regulated thats pretty cool.

Yeah the computer radios were around I've got one myself although obviously not of the same level they are today and PCM was pretty much the signal to use, I remember picking up an Airborne mag recently actually and seeing all these radios with these dicky little knobs for antennas and thinking WTF!!!

The good old days. I had a RC12L on road, and a Yokomo for 4WD off-road. smile.gif

I love planes too, but my first experience was a bad one, will try again one day, just need some spare time, any time..........

Some vids here of 50% scale planes, check out the vidoe a the very top of the page!! (New Edge 540 50%)
http://www.billhempel.com/newsite/pages/videos.html

Then check out the video of the 52% edge, a little girl actually fits in the cockpit area!!
Trust me these are good videos!

In germany there are blokes building 66 and 70% plus scale planes! Things can get nuts!
