Hey guys,
On my work computer I have avira antivirus. It has pop up adds every time you start the computer. Is there any way to stop this? I mean, it update every couple of days but that pnly appears to be an update of that advert.
Do you find avira useful?
can some one recpmmend a better free antivirus that doesn't use much computer processing yet still find virus's?
thanks

AVG antivirus and NOD32 are supposedly the best free antivirus. But they still have nothing on Kaspersky, Kaspersky isn't really all that expensive either. I use Kapersky internet security 7.0
When I was "testing" DVD ripping and converting programs I downloaded some program (cant remember the name) there was over 200 comments with suckers thanking the source, but Kasper the friendly virus killer saw a trojan was imbedded into the .exe file. I dont have that trojan but over 200 people thanked some douche for it.

you might wanna look at that link i posted and see how Kaspersky went

NOD32 is not to bad, i run that on my server, but it will be getting the arse when it runs out, and then full versions of Avira will go on all the PC's here

Avira is one of the best at the moment... Last weekend I was researching what AV and spyware protection was the best at the moment and Avira was one of the best free ones available.
If you don't want ads, buy software... I don't think clicking OK is really that much of an issue for free software

I have Avira after a nasty incident with Norton 360 (which was installed before I came here).
At this stage we are running just the free version till our norton "subscription" ends in november (gotta keep the accounts people happy)
The add isnt that annoying - its one click in the morning thats all then I dont even see it for the rest of the dayt

Not sure how true this is but I'm sure I read somewhere that alot of Antivirus programs will actually give a flase warning against the execution file in downloaded programs.

Since staff at work are no longer eligible for a free Symantec Antivirus (Corporate, heaps better) licence, i've been using Avira and have installed it on heaps of other PC's.
The only time i've seen an ad is when I first install it.
I haven't seen anything else for about three months, even after restarting the PC.
I've had two false alarms, which is fine, and overall i'm pretty pleased with it.
I used AVG a couple of years ago and had nothing but trouble with it.

I've always used Avira Antivir on customers PC's for my dads business who wanted something free, but 2 days ago I put a fresh copy of windows XP on a mates brand new laptop (he hated Vista) took me close to 3 hours of reading and experimenting with different drivers. Eventually got it right, installed Avira, handed the laptop to him 10:45PM, calls me the next day at 7PM telling me that he tried to download something and his computer got infected, freezing his whole laptop. Avira didn't pick it up, but the little Mcafee Stinger program did. :S

In all the reviews I read, it had the highest or 2nd highest detection rate. Mine always picks up things, especially when I download keygens, it seems to always find something in those.

^^ i get the same with Avast. it's never missed a beat and picks up everything.
has real time scanners on web, MSN (or any instant messanger) email Outlook), web mail, P2P file sharing (including torrents) network and a general one checking everything.
the p2p one i relised just as im writing this that the utorrent scanning wasnt on, soon as i turned it on it scanned the 3 torrents i have going straight away)
im pretty anal about what go's on with my work PC, i even have it setup so i have to manualy approve any changes to the windows registrey

Just had a thought...
Stopping the update popup ad thingy, maybe/probably:
Start > Run > Gpedit.msc
Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Software Restriction Policies > Additional Rules
Right-Click > New Path Rule... > Browse to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe > OK
Haven't had a chance to test and writing this up quickly before I forget.
Let me know!
