weird thing tonight

i have a 92 mitsu magna TR 2.6 injected auto

started it to go to g/f's house and was warming it up as per normal and then it stalled. sounded as if it ran out of fuel or something. then straight after the round black thing (starter?) on the drivers side firewall started clicking like crazy till i turned the key all the way to off.

turned it back on, stalled again, quicker this time and it started clicking again, turned the key to off and it was clicking for another about 5 seconds after.

turned it on again and it was running without stalling for a good 5 minutes before i decided to cancel my trip and wait till the morning.

today i changed the fuel filter and did a bit of re-wiring on my stereo. doubt it would have anything to do with the stereo as i had disconnected the negative.

after i spent the day on it i went for a drive to the shops and it was running fine

any ideas?

thanks

Alex

i have a 1993 magna and have never seen that black thing before? do you know what it does?
92gen2
apparently a brake booster, but i dont see the ticking noise coming from that. could be around that area somewhere though
Dr Soundstream
Not sure, i have not come across anything like that before, ill do some research and get back to you

Manifold hose goes into the brake booster? If that's not plumbed up right the car will run like crap if there is a big dirty manifold leak.... if it runs at all.

Aussiemagna forums aren't too bad for assistance if you want to go google them.

does it run rough sort of? if so you might have a vacuum leak which can cause the engine to stall. best see your local mitsubishi dealer for further assistance...

lol...

Stay away from your Mitsubishi dealership =)
Unless you want your pockets raped.

unless its connected to the belts of the engine then, no, its not your starter motor.

actually.. havent had a problem since. it was just there for 1 night and then gone.. fingers crossed

does the engine feel really rough when you are braking and do the brakes feel heavier? Sounds like a blown booster but generally your brake pedal gets harder.

the main problem (that I know of) causing Magnas to stall is the "Idle Control Servo" $$$

maybe yours is on its way out?

is it carby or injected

if injected then the solution is simple

you need a new computer

i went through something similar with my 93 magna

put in reconditioned computer and now its fine

idle control was changed a couple of years ago (40,000ks), but since that night that i posted regarding it i havent had any issues. 4cyl magnas are known for shudder (vibrations) in drive though, still want to look at either a new ECU or start off with something like the TPS, might be a bit cheaper. could also be related to the polyurethane aftermarket engine mounts cause they are a bit more solid

its fuel injected auto BTW

no, the brake pedal and brakes are fine..

except that the starter motor isn't connected via belts either.

perhaps its your flux capacitor? violin.gif

out of curiosity, what did your recon ECU cost you?

did it again at the lights the other day, still able to drive and stuff as i was able to start her up again, but dont want this happening randomly.

so the things on the list are: recon ECU, idle controller, and the TPS

BTW, i got my transmission rebuilt with a recon TCU, that wouldnt really have anything to do with it would it?

thanks

p.s. Mitsu cant do anything about it till they actually have it when it stalls, which is probably unlikely to happen as its done this twice in 3 months
