Full Version: Which is better, getting an amp to match yours speakers or overpower them?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm thinking of getting an Type S, DVC at 4+4 sub 300rms putting in a seal box and amp(MRD or MRP monos both at 300rms at 2 ohm), is it better to match or get an amp that exceeds its rms.

I'm thinking well if I match it there shouldn't be any real chance of damaging the sub and the fact it will be cheaper...

...but I been told in a sealed volume you need that extra more power then you would need in open port box and anyway it wouldn't hurt to have that little extra power which you may need.

Then again the chances of me going at 300rms is highly unlikely because I don't think my hearing is going to last too long anyway..

Opinions?

Exceed it wherever possible. The headroom will do wonders for your fidelity.

Then set the gains on the amp properly to avoid you (or ur mates) damaging any equipment.

Say you have a car and you will never do more than 120 kmph. Do you buy one that can only just make it to 120 kmph and when it gets there it will handle like crap and the engine will be screaming? Or do you get a car that can go at 200 kmph and drive it safely at 120?

Peace

You dont need to overpower your speakers, normally running 200rms into a 250rms is perfectly fine. If you did have 250rms into the sub it wouldn't be a huge noticable difference. Yet some subs peform better with low amounts of power and some need all the power they can get too really get working.

Try to get an amp that about matches your sub but dont be afraid to buy an amp that will underpower your speaker as long as its not a huge underpower issue.

300rms at 2ohm amp and 300rms sub is perfect match smile.gif also in a sealed enclosure its good to have more power on tap as it generally needs a little more compared to a ported enclosure.

Also you will very rarely be running 300rms into your sub, everyday listening you may only use 100rms for example

Yeah, I'm in both camps for this one. If you can afford to over power your speakers, why not? Lots of people crap on about "omg my powerful amp blew up my sub" but you ask them more and their like "yeah my boss amp was pumping 1800 fully sic watts into my 600W sony sub and blew it up MATE!!!1" yeah anyway moving on...

I'm underpowering my sub at the moment (well according the specs on the amp anyway...) and its fine. People treating their gains as bass knobs and turning on every crappy MX/LOUD bass boost they have is what kills most amps and subs.

know the limitations of your system too. Underpowering the subs till the amp signal distorts can ruin it just as much having too much power and as said before, using ur gains as bass volume controls
