im trying to decide between the above two components, they will be powered by a soundstream reference class A 6.0 amp.
which ones would you recommend if the focal's were about $200 and the infinity's were around $350 ???

Im running a pair of focal 165v2, and if the inifitys are brighter then this... then WOW they must be a bright pair of bitches, cuz my focals get to the point were the brightness is unbearable.
Thats why im ditchin the tweets, movin the mid bass driver to the back and getting a new pair of splits up front

you got the tweeters up high? if so then thats why they are bloody bright, try moving them down away from your ears or even use the attenuation on the crossovers

Aug 15 2005, 11:04 AM
lol, how dumb do you think i am, the attenuation was set to max (-4).
And the tweets were placed down on kick panels, (played around with everything imaginable)
Still too bright for my liking.
But i can hear how these splits would be good for concert music, where the brightness is needed for stuff like band music etc.
But as ive said before, i dont like concert music at all, club music is what i listen to and brightness and club music is a big no no. (well thats what ive become use to and thats my opinion, others may think different)
So someone might find my setup perfect for what they listen to, but for me, the focal tweets are getting ditched and the 6.5" drivers are being used for rear fill and im going to find some new front splits.

I find the a lot of Focals bright in the upper midrange also, messing with the tweeter won't help that!

I had this same question. I listened to the focals - very nice, I couldn't listen to the infinitys but got them anyway, read some good reviews and they just seemed to be a bit different. They sound very nice but the tweeter is very bright. Not a problem with some styles of music, but with music with lots of highs, cymbals or distortion they can get harsh sounding - thats with them set to -4. Pretty impressive otherwise.

That's fair enough - I also get irritated by harsh tweeters. I have a pair or Morel Pulse splits, which are probably one of the less 'bright' speakers for the money. I have them in the kicks, attenuated -2db, and still find them a tad harsh at high volumes.
They aren't too bad though. Considering that the Focals are notoriously known as bright speakers, I don't know if id be able to handle them.
If you like a softer sound with metal domes, maybe you should check out something from rainbow or diamond as they have soem quite smooth refined metal dome sets.
I'm personally upgrading to a new set of soft domes:)

I also found that the Focals tweets seemed pretty bright and harsh at higher volumes... This all changed when I fed them with just over twice the recommended power that they are rated at. I think that the focal tweeters are very unforgiving to amps that may struggle to keep power through the crossovers to the metalic domes, which will show any distortion as a horrid hiss at high volumes... I did a bit of research and found out that a lot of amps will display considerably less power at higher impedances, which isn't good when you consider that the focal crossovers in conjuction with the tweeters throws impedences higher than 16 ohms at amps that are designed to be loaded down for power.... I'd be interested to see if that could be a big factor to consider with front splits and amp combos..
Of course I also may have permanently damaged my hearing by playing tunes too loud for too long so I don't notice the harshness anymore

I've got the tweeters on my Polyglass V2's mounted on the pillars, pretty harsh lol But luckily I can turn them down through my hu.
If you get the Focals you could consider buying a different pair of tweeters and use them instead of the Focal one's.

Hi Staxin, I recently bought and installed Focal Polyglass front splits & rear 6x9's in my Toyota and agree with Ben's assessment, they need solid power and low impendence to sound good. I chose the Eclipse CD5000 amplifier for this reason due to it's ultra low impendance 8v pre-outs and low distortion characteristics. This hu also benefits from a very clean outboard 24 bit DAC which is noticeably cleaner and more detailed than the Alpine for example. I teamed the Eclipse & Focals with the Alpine V12 MRV-F545 amp which has the power needed to comfortably drive the speakers, but it's the Eclipse HU which makes the difference. Have a read of my post anyway (submitted today in Installations forum).
Best wishes,

Trism, I'm beginning to think this thread requires an exorcism! lol But remember, as long as the thread is open, members weighing up a choice between Focal vs Infinity can still get something out of feedback left (even 1yr later); remember old lines come up on CAA for sale, notwithstanding, these two brands are still boxing in the same ring (up to a point), so it's all good
