Im about to get a set of Boston Z6's installed, and all depending where i want the tweeter positioned, is it worth having ambients? Installed in my car already is a set of Pioneer (yellow cone) splits with the tweeter installled in the sails. If i get the Z6 tweeters put in the kicks, would it be a good idea to raise the stage height by leaving the Pioneer tweets where they are?
Let us know wat you guys reckon.

Try Jaycar super tweeters.

This depends entirely on your budget and the equipment you have.

Metallic dome tweeters (as i believe the pioneer ones are) tend to be very harsh.

now, any tweeter up in the ambient location is going to be reflecting off glass etc, which will add harshness to an already harsh tweeter. I'd go for a soft domed tweeter up high for ambience duties.

Any ambient tweets are going to have to be highpassed, very high, and also muted.

you want them to be of reasonable quality (considering the level of your other speakers).

i'm no expert on tweeters, but the jaycar kevlar splits tweeters are a damn good budget option.

you could also try retreads on your porsche. wink.gif

wait until the Z's are installed and see what you think. i'd expect the soundstage to be open and high if done well. adding ambients can lift the stageheight but whether you can justify the cost is another thing.

what it takes is:
*suitable 2-channel amp (or spare channels)
*suitable HP filter: is use 10kHz with 12dB/oct slope
*suitable attenuation: simply set the gain properly
*suitable tweeters: ideally exactly the same tweeters as your splits; maybe consider some from the boston pro series
*installation: should be simple enough

given all the hassle...just wait and see.

Cant live without mine...
U definetly want to HP these at around the 10 k mark and u definetly dont want to be running these at the same level as ur main tweets.

They arent there to dominate, just add ambience, so u will require the seperate amp.

General location is in the corner of the dash following the curves of the windscreen if you want good height and depth.

Not worth going cheap here, I think ud be better off stickin to the Bostons if you're thinking of going jaycar.

don't put your Z6 tweeter in the kick panel, put it in the A pilar, then u won't need ambient

U don't really need an ambient tweeter... just put your tweeter in the A pillar and that will do... what you need is a midrange to cover up frequency gap between tweeter and midbass...

However, i've tried ambient tweeter once when i still using my USD Waveguide... and not any tweeters are suitable for ambient... i've tried scanspeak 6000 and it doesn't sound right... the best ambient tweeter that i have ever heard is the lowest range from Swan Diva...

ps. NO HARD DOME PLZ

ive already got the tweeters, which are silk dome, installed in the sails (the inside of the side mirrors) and i have an old 2 channel amp i can use to run them.
If i get the Z's installed in the A-pillar wont it be a little bright? Correct me if im wrong but the Z tweets are aluminium are they not?
Thanks for the replies, given me something to chew on..

set the Z6's up properly and you shouldent need ambiants.

you only need the sup if you mount your main tweet in the kick. besure to determine the actual r0ll-off of your main and staet from there. usually it is at 10-12K. I personally found 18K at 6 db slope work fine and require less R to drop the level. in fact it blend in quite perfectly with no R at all in my last system which is fully passive
