Just wondering on the legalities of mounting batteries externally.

In my case, i've converted my EA falcon to straight gas, which poses the problem of limited boot room now (as i had no gas tank before). I have dual optima batteries that i need to place somewere (engine bay is a no no). Rather than trying to cram two batteries in the boot along with 4 amps and 2 subs, i've been thinking about mounting them under the car in sealed boxes were the petrol tank used to be?? There is HEAPS of room under their and clearance wont be an issue, just wondering if their are any laws that i need to look out for??

cheers

Talk to your local RTA about that.. I think if you put them inside an enclosed metal box it'd be OK, but I dont work for the RTA tongue.gif

Surely just mount them in a cage on your hood! biggrin.gif tongue.gif

One battery either side of a huge aftermarket alternator would look the goods!

OK, gave Vic roads a buzz.

For those interested, they told me their was no problem with mounting them there, aslong as it had sufficient ground clearance (duh), was secured properly and was sheilded in some way from the elements. I will be looking into it a little further just to be absolutely certain, but from what i hear it's all good to go biggrin.gif Might make a fake drop tank just for kicks and added protection tongue.gif

I've thought of that option but decided not to as i've already paid for a brand new conventional one and that's just more money i need to spend tongue.gif I may look into doing something like that later on when money's not so scarse but for now i really want to limit the amount i'm spending (i've still got about 5 grand of other things i need to buy for the car).

I think it'll be kinda cool anyway, people will get confused when they can;t seem to find were i've located the battery tongue.gif

I was actually thinking of setting up something similar to what skyline's use. The battery is in the boot but they have a set of terminals in the engine bay were you can jump start the car from....
