Ok so wasnt sure whether to put this here or in General Audio but basically i was at work today (i work in aircraft maintenance) and I was looking at some wiring that was lying around, and i came across 2 styles that stood out, both of them are what appears to be a RCA style lead. 2 centre cables surrounded by a thin insulation which is then surrounded by a woven shield then surrounded by a tough plastic/teflon sheath total thickness about 4 - 5mm now question is if i can get my hands on some of this which shouldnt be to hard as they pull a lot out when doing mod work to replace, change, etc.. do you guys think this would be any good to try and make some RCA leads out of just thought it might be interesting to try as i imagine it is fairly high quality, as it is aircraft wiring, oh the actual wiring strands appear to be tinned, though i wouldnt be sure, i'd have to ask some of the Queer traders to find out. Is there any ways i can test it for resistance, noise inductance etc to another purchased high quality RCA, if i was to make up a set. Anyway waht are peoples thoughts on this, i thought it would be something interesting to try.
Thanks

coundnt quite workout what type of cable your describing but
in my words, an rca cable is made from two seperate insulated cables, joined together. in each cable there is a sheilding sheath, insulation then a centre conducter.
It could be ok, so long as the wire is a good size and the sheilding is of good quality. its very hard to say without actually looking at it and feeling it.
get a photo up if possible and it would make it heaps easier.

if you're getting it for free, you may as well have a go at making a cable.
not much to lose really

Ok found a bit more info out centre 2 leads appear to be roughly 22gauge and are actually silver strands, which are run along next to 2 similar sized plastic strips to maintain the round shape of the whole cable. Then surrounded by a very tightly woven shielding and then a plastic/teflon sheath. We call it Data bus cable/cat5.

p.s. I'll try and get some photos up

Also managed to get a vast quantity of CAT 2 cable probably 50-100m of it, its a similar style but also older.

well silver is an excellent conductor, but is also a bit frail. try not to bend it too much.
a tightly woven sheild is also excellent.
sounds the goods, will be interesting to see pics

Well latest update had a saw some Stinger Bullet series RCA's the other day and the cableing used is very similar, only difference in outside appearance, is color and a slight size difference. Sorry cant get photos my camera is crape so you cant really make out any of the shielding etc..
