Unless you've burnt your car down you should be right
I've done that before, and nothing was damaged...worst case is that the battery might have copped some damage IMO

Check that the battery still holds a charge (check it with a multimeter when you park it at night, and next morning before you start the car, shouldnt be a noticable drop, 0.1V maybe). Apart from that, no biggie, as long as it was only a few seconds. Starter motors are a near short anyway, as far as batteries are concerned.

if they stay together, either the wires will melt and the car will burn to the ground, or the battery will explode.
if they just brush together then it'll spark.
rather than asking us this question, maybe you should be asking yourself why they weren't fused!

Without a fuse its possible to do a bit of damage if wires are left shorted long enough. Fire, blown battery etc. Lots of fun...

and what about if the car gets started?
is that any worse?

I hope this are all "what ifs" or I'm getting scared!
If it was a really good short (decent connection, didnt burn the wire out etc) then I'm guessing you would have trouble starting the car. Not to mention the obscene voltage issues you would have...

The wires may have sparked which caused the carpet to set on fire

I personally like to hook the battery up BACKWARDS. That’s a favorite party trick: only cost me my Alpine EQ and the fusible link……

That happened to me when I was removing an amp to change from 8ga to 4ga cables...I unhooked everything, went to get out the car and on getting off the seat, the cables managed to find each other and spark. That was it though - I was quick to get to it. Dunno what would have happened if I let it sit there while having a beer.

When i was installing my stereo into my old car my mate connected the amp power wire to the battery as soon as the wires where laid in the car, then with out noticing the wire touched my tow bar and all of a sudden my other mate turns to me and we both ask each other if we had farted then all of a sudden smoke was coming out of my car because all the plastic insulation had melted and half the wire and it almost burnt my carpet
