Ok, I can't find out any information RE: Alpine Type-X speakers on CAA, seems like the search function isn't working properly ATM? Anyway...

Alpine Type-X SPX-177R 6.5" 2-Way Splits
Focal K2 Power 165 2-Way Splits
Focal Polyglass 270 V3 3-Way Splits

They all have a RRP of AROUND $700. I don't have much access to go and listen to them myself, so please don't say "Go and listen to them, and pick for yourself!" I am after a general idea of what the Type-X's are like in terms of SQ. What are the Polyglass 3-Ways like, and how do they compair to the K2 2-Ways?

And any other "general opinions" on what around $700 could buy for a SQ based front end.

Could someone also let me know who sell Dyn's in Tassie (or Vic if none).

Cheers,
Nick.

i used to have a set of 165V3e splits, i found the tweeter really harsh. if you have the cash go up to the K2 range, in my opinion, sound alot better with the TN52 tweeter rather then the TN47 found in polyglass series.

cant really comment on the SPX177r's though......

cheers

Yeah, i think the Alpine has the better tweeter, and I also find the mid a bit lower..

LOL Well, just to set the record straight, I got a company car, sold my car / audio equimpent. I quit my job (no more company car for me!), decided to go to uni and enjoy some extra time with my wife. We've been living on one car for around 18 months, sucks for me, no audio fix!

So, I've got another Mirage (silver instead of blue this time), and it's time to start over again.

Given up? NEVER, just taking a break, and giving my wallet a rest!

There's not so many familiar faces around these days, but I'm sure in time that will change.

Cheers,
Valk.

Thr k2ps sound awesome, youll probably have to turn down the tweeters tho
HooDs
I had exactly the same problem.

I was tossing up between the 177's and the K2's.

In the end I chose the 177's because I felt they had more of a full sound than the K2's.

Particularly with note resonance with band orientated music.
Sustained notes really held thier ground for thier entirety of the actually chord/hit.

I havent even had my new gear tuned yet and it sounds amazing.

It's hard 2 decide for yourself without being able to personally hear it, but if you have any questions regarding the X's feel free 2 pm me. biggrin.gif

i used to hv 177r and 165v2, 177r has stronger midbass compare to my 165v2. (my front door are fully deaden as i fit them in factory location) The only prob for me is lack of high mid compare to focal. btw i'm also learning towards k2p as i'm gonna get a pair soon. i hv heard nth but good about k2p. Anyway u won't go wrong either way. laugh.gif B)

We stock both and i like em both but I have been very impressed with the Alpines...a fantastic bang for buck speaker...have done a few sets now and they sound sweet whether run off just a high powered deck or an amp...better of the amp though biggrin.gif

Been using X type splits for over 12 months. Detail is best you'll get for the price, midbass is very good, but the tweeters are just that tiny bit too shrill. Cannot match a pair of Dynaudios (although they come very close, often referred to as a poorer mans Dyns).

Mine are EQ'd using a 30 band 1/3 octave Phoenix Gold and they are a damn sight better, but still just topped for overall driver integration by the Dynaudios.

I dont like Focal and yes I'm biased. Give someone a gun so they can shoot my foot.

I just picked up a pair of Type-X's, they look veryyyy nice. Havent got them installed yet, too poor atm. =[

I noticed though they are bi-amp-able. Anyone tried this? What were the results?
shiny_car
the results of bi-amping will depend on the quality of the amp and the power involved. if you have a 4-channel amp, the options are to bi-amp or bridge the amp to 2 powerful channels. some people find the added power of bridging exceeds the benefit of bi-amping: louder vs tiny bit of increased clarity and dynamics. but if the 4-channel is powerful enough and top quality, bi-amping is probably the way to go.
