Hi all,
I realise this is one of those which one would be better threads and if this has been covered somewhere else then i apologise as i couldnt find it before submitting this but anyways...
Ive narrowed my sub searching down to the alpine 12" type-x series or the JL 12w7, the only thing is i can't make up my mind, as for the amps if i went the alpine id get a alpine amp or if i went the jl id get the 1000/1 amp
The type of music i listen to is varied from dance, r&b, rap, metal, hip hop, pop, alternative etc etc etc and im after the "SQ" aspect
So if anyone could help me make up my mind about these 2 subs then it would b very much appreciated thanks!
Regards
Daniel

I'm also curious how the X type fares in regards to SQ as im tossing up between the 12 and an Image Dynamics.

isn't that JL is around $2000 in here? and the alpine is around $800? not a fair comparison if you compare it with oz price, but it's a fair comparison if you compare it using overseas price (both sub cost around $600)

the 12w7 should be about 1500, while its the 13w7 thats about 2000....but if you have the money i would pick the w7 on the basis of its reputation
i really like my jlaudio w7
i have yet to hear the alpine type x
both subs look incredible
so in other words very very very hard choice
and its not like you can go and hear one, or test it in your car

Hey all
the 12w7 is around $1180 and the type x is around $700 (in WA), yes glad we can agree on it being a hard choice

its just unfortunate just like Jas said that you can't demo them! you can only take the Audio shop's "word" on what they would "like"
Also Jas do you find your 12w7 being "accurate" with its DOOF DOOF

as in if you have a song that has fast subbass notes in it do you hear everyone of them or would it be just one big long DOOF! <- lol only way i can think of explain wat im trying to get at hehe as i currently have a Pioneer 121SPL and i hate it!
Anyone here at all heard both? anyone

my mate got the 13W7 for $1400 if u want to know sale prices
i have a 13w7 not 12w7
not sure what the difference between them would be.
it would be described as deep and effortless. It doesnt seem one noted either.
13w7 vs dual 12inch type x ...not sure which i would choose.

I rarely post in this sort of thread but I have good experience with both drivers.
The W7 line is a fantastic line of drivers but the 12W6 I would rate better as a SQ driver (and I've heard it said that the guys at JL hold the same opinion)
Now, yes the Type X may be the less expensive of the two and so some would say that the JL may have the advantage.
In fact, regardless of the lower cost of the Alpine, I feel it the better of the two by quite a long way if you want overall accuracy, slam and dynamics.
The JL I found by comparison was a little "softer" in its sound (which is not a bad thing if that's what you're after).
Sure Alpine as a theme has been done to death some would say but these Type X's are pretty hard to beat and you'd have to spend alot of time searching to get something that may only prove a little better.
Go the Type X!

Why not do something a little different and try and track down an Infinity Perfect 12VQ in a good system and see what you think?
Like the Alpine, don't let the relatively small price put you off...

From my experience. I would go for 12w6V2 for SQ reason. I listened to 13W7 and feel that the sound lack of detail. yes it is very good down low. no, it have too little detail above 60 Hz. anything higher than seem crumple together.

Thanks for the replies, Winno - Infinity Perfect 12VQ - sorry i am only giong between the type x an the jl as thats the only ones i can seem to get never seen that anywhere, you also say that the type x is accurate if so then thats wat i would like as my current pioneer 121spl on most songs if you have boom its fine but if u have boom boom boom fast its one loud drone whereas the same song on my logitech z-680 pc speakers sub goes boom boom boom just the way i like it

otherwise once again thanks for all the replies i appreciate it! sorry for not responding to all the replies arrghh soo tired this bit of workin and night schoolin is ******

you use your sub above 60hz????
for my system ive tried all the settings on the h701 and 7998 and 50hz @ 18db/oct seemed to work very well, and seemed to sound the best at this setting.

Maybe it's just me, but am I the only one who has noticed that control of a subwoofer has nothing to do with the subwoofer at all, but the amplifier?
The guy is asking how he can get a sub that has clear distinct bass that doesn't just blur each note....
...and as far as I am aware that's all about the power and quality of the amplifier, and the damping factor.
Unless of course the Pioneer 121SPL sub is really THAT bad... but a poor quality sub would distort the sound, not blur the notes together....

I think it has more to do with the box design.
Well, it involves all factors. Dan04, what kind of boxes were these both in? What kind of amp was running them? And what type of car?
dan04
Sep 22 2005, 04:36 PM
Well the jl is in a custom sealed box, running off a jl 1000/1 amp n sounds sweeeett, but anyways the cars a Laser TX3 2-Door, the 121spl was in a custom made ported box and it was running pioneers class d amp that gives out 500w rms at 2 ohms

My 121SPL is running in a 1.8cuft sealed box on a jaycar monobloc at 2ohm 700rms. It dont miss a beat at all, plays excently with songs that have fast bass beats, ive very suprised by mine.
Its possibly because you got it in a ported box that the bass is boomy and not as accurate.
