i thought this would be the best place to get a good response.
a mate of mine is building a custom 3 way setup and needs some crossovers built.
6" mid bass
4" mid
1" tweet
the 6" will play between 80hz and (i suggested) 500hz... the 4" will play between 500hz and 4khz... the tweet will play 4khz up.
the system will be run semi active using 2 2 channel amps(50wrms a channel) one to run the 6" and the other to run the 4 and tweet. he allready has a 2way passive crossover for the 4" and tweet.
my question is. he needs a low pass 500hz 12dB/oct and a high pass with the same specs.
he has two options to set this up he can either get a line level unit built to go b4 the amps, or have some speaker level units in between the amp and 6" for the LP and one between the current 2way crossover and the other amp for the HP(to essentially band pass the 4").
im thinkin what would be ideal is to ditch the 2way cross over and get a custom built one with a band pass for the 4" and a HP for the tweet. but my mates on a bit of a budget.
would it be better to have a line level unit(rca, liek they did bakc in the day...) built or a speaker level unit? i originally suggested a lower x-over point at around 250-300 but was advised that 500hz would be more suitable(is this the case???)
we are in wollongong and will ask around at the local specialty audio shops. but i am thinking we'll have to look elsewhere(sydney) can anyone recomend a place where we can can get these built and any idea on cost???
thanks. Jono.

has he considered a head unit that can do a 3 way crossover network? (alpines, for instance)

thanks but already has a HU its got 3 sets of preouts and some basic x-overs. adn on a bit of a tight budget. it owuld be easier to havea ncie 2 way setup but hes adamant on building this semi active 3 way system.

cheers damo. i have considered trying to pick up some "factory" crossovers that allow bi amping. but then i might not get the ideal x-over points. on the other hand the 6" 4" 1" is a fairly common 3 way setup so ill keep lookin?
Damo, ru you selling those x-overs???

the elate 3 ways i have are the 6, 3, 1 (or supremo in my case) but the tweeters used ar 6ohm. not sure if that will pose a problem..
i could be dude.. ill see what the retail is on them (and the crossover points) and let you know if your interested.. i have no use for them as im going active 3 way front stage..

there is no big juice to be had. will either be using a 4X50wrms early alpine or
2 2 channel amps... going semi active will give greater tuneability as the speakers are a little mismatched(as i said he's determined) so i(we) will need all the help i can get to make it sound good.

Have you already got the amps, if not why not get a 4 channel and a 2 channel and go fully active. Ive got a 3 way PG active x-over for sale if he needs it??
