Hi, i have a problem with my network i thought someone here might know whats wrong, so heres the problem on the weekend i changed my network card to a 100 Mb card and also changed to a switch as well. My problem is none of my computers or shared drives now show up on any of the others, But they all can still use the shared internet connection. So there must be some sort of network connection. I have tried to ping the computer sharing the network connection from the other computers but it just times out, but i can ping all the other computers and they bounce fine, but i still cant access the shared drives on them. The Computer sharing the connection is running windows XP and the others are running a mix of XP and 98se. Sorry for the long post.
So Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
Mark.

ummm got more details?
you running dynamic or static IP addresses?
you're XP box is setup as your internet gateway/router?
although it won't make much of a difference, i find that putting all the PC's on the same workgroup helps, especially when runninga hybrid network. They seem to find each other better, in (network neighborhood)
You can always ping other PC's even if they're not in the same workgroup (unless there's an issue)
make sure that all IP addresses are in the same subnet
you should be using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
therefore the first 3 sections of each IP address should be exact and the last section must be unique to each PC.
for example:
192.168.0.1 (should be private address of the gateway)
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3
192.168.0.4
192.168.0.5
would all be on the same subnet.
but
193.168.0.2
134.168.0.2
144.168.0.2
203.168.0.2
162.168.0.2
won't be on the same subnet and won't be able to "talk" to each other, when they attempt to communicate the gateway will think that the IP address belongs to the public domain and direct the request to your ISP.
this could happen if you happened to miskey an address so check carefully.

From memory, when opening a folder on an XP machine from a 98 machine, you must be logged into the 98 machine with the same user name as what you've logged into the XP machine with.I could be wrong however, been a longgggggggg time since I played with 98
