Similar to this on ebay:

USB storage

I've got a burner and zip drive, but figured this is quick, easy, cheap and practical.

Anyone use one of these? Positive/negative opinions?! Is there any difference in different brands?

Is there an online place i can buy these from?

Cheers
Dom

We use Apacer Handy Drive USB Storage keys for stuff around the office, and I swear by them.... basically they do exactly what they are designed to do, and arent big and clunky....

go to www.tecs.com.au and check out the range of USB key storage devices on there, they have some good prices

Does anyone know if you can boot off these things? As in load an OS onto one of them and have it is the primary boot device??

Hey Bradg, how big are the Apacer one's you use at work? I only really want one if it's as small as the one on ebay.

Do you think it's worth buying the ones which are on ebay?
nemesis
yeh they're awesome, used them at worked for ages now (got 256mb ones with the ibm notebooks) and they take a bit of abuse too. i dont see why u couldnt boot from one providing your bios allows botting from it in the first place, as it sets up as another drive anyway
yeh they rock, im buying one for home tomorrow Transcend 128MB for $75 from MSY actually (and a new flat screen monitor, wohoo! )

So should i really be concerned with the quality of one brand as opposed to another? Or are they all very similar?

Perhaps we should organise a group buy

well i've got an optima 32 meg USB flashdisk/pendant (it resides around my neck when im home) and its quick.
Probably as quick as burning to a CD. It was s freebe so price i dunno. Their realy handy buggers, if you get one i recommend a 256 meg or 128meg one so you can fit some mp3's and the like on!
cheers

the apacer ones arend very big at all, maybe 5cm/2 inches in length and about 2cm wide... they're silver too

i'm pretty sure you can't because when u plug them in, windows has to install drivers to make them work (unlike a CD-ROM/Floppy), other than that they are fantasic.. pretty fast .. great if u need to move files or work on files between 2 sep computers.

They are great, we picked up a few 64 meg ones in Shanghai in february, about $20AUD, definately worth every dollar.

brilliant things !

you can boot off them provided your motherboard supports booting off USB.

the only thing to look out for from 1 brand to another is their size, some you cant fit another USB plug into the USB next to the one your using because they are too chunky. and some come with a little write prtect switch and others dont.
MrMonaro
By the way windows 2000 and XP do not need drivers to make them work, but usualy on 98 or below you do - they come with drivers.

I have a 64m one, works great, I boot off it, but you have a computer that supports booting off usb device.

BTW: A few times when I have plugged mine in it has came up as being empty with no files on it.
Just don't keep anything importent on it with out having a back up on a computer somewhere.
Mr_Bob
i've had one for over 12 months now, and it now comes up with device I/O error and refuses to read/write to it.
i've tried multiple USB ports...
then again, my brother had it in his posession for a while, i believe he had to dig it out from under a pile of junk in his car when i wanted to use it...(probably doesn't help)

i have a 128MB one i use for uni. i think they are great, you can boot off mine and password protect it, but like every one else said you need a certain Mother board to boot from them. another thing is that i went pricing them. the big named places sold them for about $160 i got mine from a little computershop for about $90. my father has a few for his work as well and as for compareing them with there prices. The cheaper ones are more chunky (you cant fit two side by side) and there plugs seem to be a miniture bit bigger (you sometimes have to jam them into the ports. but still it is worth finding a cheap one. also the biggest i have seen is 528MB so you can dump absoultly anything to them.

You can buy 1gb (1024 mb) ones, don't know the point of them. and cost...
Stooge007
Check out www.adelong.com.au

32Mb = $45
64Mb = $65
128Mb = $89
256Mb = $145
512Mb = $295
1Gb = $695

Cheapest i've seen. They have a shop in York St, Sydney for the NSW people.

you can get 2 gig ones now too... havent seen any for sale tho but i bet the price will be $$$$
