Full Version: Still not sure

I made a post a while ago about building a sub box, and I came to the conclusion with the help of shiny car that sealed was the best.

This is my sub
ftp://208.187.38.55/Phoenix_Gold/Manuals/..._sub_manual.pdf

But im still not convinced, most of the music I listen to has electronic bass lines.
And ive been graphing the sub in winISD Pro and with a sealed box at 56L the -3db is at 40hz
If a 30hz tune was about to play which im sure comes through alot in electronic music then its down at -8db on the transfer magnitude graph.
If i were to play music that had bass sweeps that was low, its going to sound weird as all f*** wont it?

If the box is 100L and ported, tuned to 20 hz, the -3db is at 30hz and the group delay at 30hz is only 10ms.

How many people listen to electronic music with sealed boxes?

I'm going for SQ of course, but some how ive convinced myself that a sealed box is not going to give me SQ in this case, or am i just stupid thinking this and should i build a sealed box?

I would like to get some more opinions from you guys about this, thanks.

maybe try a larger sealed box?

Any sort of group delay doesnt seem to fit in with electronica too well. you can really hear the lag in badly setup systems, and its really f*ing annoying.

EQ is your friend, most if not all systems are going to require a bit of a boost really down low.

in terms of electronica, with fast, accurate bass, you really do want a sealed box, as that provides the best response.

1. You'll find very little is recorded at 30Hz or below

2. The in-car -3dB point is vastly different to the theoretical -3dB point generated unless the software can calculate the end result with the cabin gain (transfer function).

I know every car is different, but what would be an average cabin gain, mid size car (93 TR magna)
eg between what frequencies are boosted and by roughly how much?
Liquidity
depends on where you put the sub woofer, and which way its facing.

we cant really give an accurate guess, because there's so many factors, and the odds are nobody's done an accurate measurement for your model car, with your model woofer, with your size box tongue.gif

this is why we can only advise about tuning over the internet to a certain point. Eventually, you need an expert ear, or an RTA.
