hey guys

i have a sub here that i took out the voice coil of and smashed the sub into peices... just wondering what colour the actual voice coil around the inside bit is meant to be? is it meant to be a copper colour or black? and is it meant to be doubled over randomly if it's a dual voice coil sub? i will post a pic..

is this voice coil blown from too much power put into it or is it fine?

also are there meant to be those ends sticking out? and it smells really really bad.. like a real metalic smell.. sort of hard to explain

i'm mainly just after pointers if this has been fried or not.. even though it's no longer working (obviously) but i would much rather someone we a pro at this type of stuff than a noob tell me it's fine or f##ked..

the reason i ask on what the colour should be and if it's blown or not is because i can also see the normal copper colour plus the rest black.. the normal colour is more around the outside.. its hard to see and explain but yeh sorry

just to make sure.. becuase the sub is a dual voice coil.. it should have 2 wires coming out like it has but when it's been wrapped around the circular bit it overlaps randomly instead of all in line, how is it meant to be and what colour?, i think thats a better way to describe my question

any info would be great smile.gif

it's a clarion, one of those 15" silver wok looking ones.. well was.. it's in peices now obviously becuase thats the coil out of it... thats the 2nd clarion sub i've gone through now, the first one the surround rubber broke away from the basket

what do u guys think of alpine type-r's 15" i got a price locally for 699 but i can get it off a mate who is a dealer (not dodgy but cheap) he is getting back to me on the price

What were you powering it with?
ngregory
an alpine 350rms v-power (one of the current mono blocks)

my missus was driving the car and she flew it so f*** knows how much bass was going through it sad.gif poor subby

f*** it stank alot when i took the sub out of the enclosure.. lol

This is a good read about burnt voice coils and such, shows diagrams etc.

Shows the effects of clipping on a voice coil too.

so you think it got blown up by too much power or the amp clipping and creating a square wave??

the sub is rated to 300rms or 350rms something like that, the amp is an alpine mono-block 350rms v-power and was on 3 quarter gain, my missus was driving the car and blew it up so who knows how much she was pumping through it.. i was cut though

Amp clipping. Set your amps right and you won't have this problem
ngregory
will have a read through all the info posted and make sure this problem doesn't happen again! thanks guys for all your replies

what do u guys think of the alpine type-r 2+2ohm?
pig75
Duel 2ohm won’t suit your amp you need a 2ohm load so a duel 4ohm would be better and i would have alot more than 350w for that sub

The sub has been over powered not burnt from clipping... Clipping will hang the sub out of the V/C gap and will burn from one side/edge inwards, where your pics are an even all over burn the sub was moving in and out as it should-over powered and burnt!!! Hope this helps... Must of sounded like ass to before it burnt...

how was it over powered with a 350w amp?
BlackIce
Clipping increases duty cycle.
Increased duty cycle increases heat.
Heat melts adhesives, resins and burns the copper.

Set the amp up properly..

You say it was a 300w sub running off a 350wrms amp. Add some clipping (not hard clipping) it still wont produce a square wave, over time its enough to build up the heat, example above. Got to hot and burnt. Death by over powering not by hard clipping...

You were right.. until you said it was due to overpowering.. its heat due to an increased duty cycle caused by clipping. At no point did I say 100% duty cycle, which would indicate square wave.
