an inverter takes a positive voltage and turns it into a negative for whatever reason

usually they take the 12V DC voltage from your battery and turns it into 240V AC (so you can plug house appliances into your car)

^^^ I agree with the latter sentence.. but the first is not exactly correct

It basically makes 240V AC from a 12V DC supply (car battery).
