Gang,

Keeping with our threads about how to mount speakers (a quick search will reveal Astra and Pulsar door threads) we've had a surprisingly large number of people also ask me how to do 323 (SP20) doors over the last couple of years so I thought I'd chuck a thread up about it.

Okay, eight step proceedure for doing an 323 doors correctly.

Step one: Take one original door complete with factory moulded plastic base speaker. Take plastic off and remove residue.

Step two: Apply sound deadening to outer skin.

Step three: Add diffuser panels behind the speaker.

Step four: Run aftermarket speaker cables through modified door plug socket. In the 323 where the cables are all used we simply use a single 6mm hole above the main wires and run the cables through there. We also prefer to buy the plugs in from Mazda to avoid damaging your factory ones.

Step five: Sound deaden inner skin and remove air bubbles. Seal spacer onto door. Leave enough clearance for door handle and lock control rods to move freely. Also leave a little deadening around the top of the speaker hole to act as a 'roof' against water when it rains.

Step six: Make sure the midrange has a gasket because there is little use in going to all thise trouble and then having no seal on the door itself. Solder the trimmed speaker wires onto speaker. Don't use crimp terminals because their two best traits are falling off and creating resistance.

Step seven: Heat shrink around the terminals to protect them. Unlike electrical tape, heat shrink will not begin moving after a couple of months.

Step eight: Screw speaker onto spacer (the spacer is used to mount to the factory holes ensuring you don't damage the car by drilling holes) making sure you seal around the speakers in order to keep the bass strong.

There you have it; one 323 door done, Fhrx Studios style. biggrin.gif

Bugger me, but they look like easy doors to do. Lots of holes for the top half of the outer skin, my god. smile.gif

Thanks for another great tute.

what sound deadner is used in the inside of the doors and the outer part? It seems like they are two different things.

marty,

good tutorial ,

mind you the last time I spoke to a mazda dealer you had to buy the harnesses to get the plugs.

can i just ask....

how do u change the window or door lock or something if you have sound deadining there?

is it easy to remove or something???

hehe

peel it off. had to do it once already on a vehicle. it's a messy job when you do.

Depends on how you put it on.

A lot of people put the MDF panels in, followed by a layer of duct tape, then SD. When its time to get into the door, you just peel the duct tape off, knock out the mdf, and you have access again.

If you've solidly SD'd over the mdf though, your going to have a ball. Best choice is probably just cut out the SD outline, and heat it up with a gun, grab heatproof gloves and scrapers and try and get it up.

I forgot fhrx is also a store lol not just an installer smile.gif

sorry for turning this into a n00b SD question thread, but OT, which would be better, the G-Spot Flexi for $150 or Dynamat Door Kit for $129?
Fhrx
They're both quite good products and quite effective.

As Chris has said above, if you need to access the door you simply peel it back, do your work then re-apply it. smile.gif

hey marty what diffuser panels do you usually use ?
s_tim_ulate
Go jaycar on the cheap

Like $7 for two or something Then use spray adhesive on both sides to stick it down.

Otherwise there are many exotic diffusers out there for 10 times the price

I use G-Spot wave breakers most of the time unless the customer specifies otherwise. Focal plain chant is another we use from time to time but it's $99 for the things!

Why not post these in the Tutorials forum ?
Fhrx
Because they're not official tutorials. Whilst some of my stuff does get "tutorialised", generally it's in reply to someones' query that I post threads like this. smile.gif
