I use Selleys Kwik Grip, straight out of the tin, brush it onto both surfaces, then roll the box onto it, then leave it for a bit and continue onto the other sides.

I ended up buying a litre of adhesive that I have to glue on both the MDF & carpet. Bought it from the place where I bought my carpets

glu stick works best!
ive used the spray on adhesive for carpet and it worked well as it soaks inot the wood and carpet and bonds well, with vynil it didnt work nearly as well.
the paint on stuff works best, u might have to wait a bit for it to dry but at the same time uve got plenty of time to paint it on nice and even and lay the carpet down slowly etc...

yeah i done the paint on stuff
wacked in on both surfaces then let it go tacky then i stuck it on and dumped some phone books on top of it to make sure its sticks well
its good to keep even pressure on it for a good 30mins till it drys completly

contact adhesive is the best stuff to use...
make sure you buy a decent one otherwise it will come undone after time.
definitely the best thing for vynel as well.

top layer is jaycar grey speakerbox carpet(much fluffier than the back stuff) the flames are also carpet just cut out in the shape of flames, ive also tested using 6mm foam. i need to find some denser and thinner(~3mm) foam for it to work so i just used off cut carpet. it shows up well but extra well when light is cast across it at a shallow angle.
if you notice on the top right corner, there was actually quite a abre space when i made the desing so there is a 2nd underlayer(3rd layer if u will) just a small flame design to fill in the spot.
i made this test piece to see how it would work as the flames only sit just off normal height it is very easy to stretch material over the shape and press into the edges. i will be doing my door trims like this...

cheers mate, hardest thing will be covering pods as well, i am going to try and use a single piece of vynil, velour(havnt decided yet) so that pod and trim are all integrated and smooth, if i F**k it up it can stay bare wood til i cna afford a pro to do it...
