hey guys,
ive currently just started year 12 and am considering doing a car audio tutorial style dvd for my design and technology major design project (MDP), which will encorporate interactive tutorials on how to do basic car stereo installing...
i was thinking that i may include basic stuff like,
*installing an aftermarket head unit
*designing and building a subwoofer enclosure
*installing an amplifier
*designing an building custom door pods
*setting gains on an amplifier
*sound deadening a vehicle
*why to use a relay and how it works
and any other simple tutorials that i could do... but id have to keep it simple, so itd be a beginners guide, (not an audiophiles guide) and that the everyday joe could use and understand, so sound deadening and custom door pods etc may not be necessary... also, its only a 4.7gb dvd so i dunno how much id fit on there...
i was also thinking that i could possibly ask permission to reference this website, (since its an awesome resource) and also ask permission to use peoples photos and instructions (from their tutorials)... but i would have the instructions read and recorded for the dvd, so u can hear them rather than have to read it...
then i was also thinking of having a separate chapter/menu, to give a basic explanation of (relatively) simple stuff like ohms law, explaining a cars electrical system, explaining crossovers, understanding what speakers and/or subs do, how an amp works, function/explanation of fuses, and possibly the car audio jargon and other stuff like that... so people can see this info first, then understand wot theyre doing wen they see the tutorials... get me?
well anyways, thats just my initial thoughts, and id appreciate any other ideas and information or improvements or anything like that...
**please no inappropraite talk and/or swearing, or smart remarks because i can print this and use this in my folio, so it should remain relatively professional**
thanks fellas...
any help will be much appreciated...

nice idea.
i'd be worried about people suing after they blow up their car after watching your DVD

would only need a warning at the start and end...
something along the lines of this
"DISCLAIMER: by reading the above post you have absolved me of any responsibility whatsoever if what I have recommended happens to break any of your stuff, or burns your car to the ground!!!"

great idea mad, maybe use existing written tutorials from here or other sites(providing u give the author/s due credit)
does the project have to be ur own material or is it the compiling of the DVD that counts for marks... if it doesnt have to be ur original material(you will still need to edit/change existing material to suit the DVD medium) then "borrowing" sounds like a good idea.
EDIT: there woudnt be much point just putting a word file or pdf of the tutorials maybe have them read out and simply have little foot notes for each photo. slide show kinda thing? (i dont kno this media project laadee daa... stuff)
good luck with it rick...

why don't you have a chat with admin and see what can come of it.
if the project you end up with is put together well and detailed enough, it could possibly be produced for sale from this site as a form of fund raiser?
i'm sure having the tute's in DVD format would be very handy for many of the noobs to follow.
just a thought.

i edited my original post Rick, see above for answers...
Great idea SSSchwing, if he can do a good enough job im sure admin would be able to "sell" it to further advance this lovely CAA forum i like to call "home".......

PM FROM MARC

Your use of the material is OK with me.
Also, email will be fine if you wish for the letter. All our contact details are on the contacts page if you need them anyway.
Cheers and good luck with it. I'd like to see the end product if thats OK when you are done. You never know, make it good enough and we might even be able to sell a few copies for you in the online store!
Cheers,
Marc
yep permission granted, and all is sweet...
i will have to ask permission to copy and paste peoples direct tutorials (from the tutes forum) but permission in general to copy from the site is all sweet...
thanks fellas, and thanks marc...
any more suggestions and stuff as to what to include on the dvd would be great... im open to all offers and suggestions...
i dunno if id sell it online, coz people would just burn it and distribute, which isnt the purpose of the dvd, unless i can get some serious "burn proof" software to eliminate this...
BlackIce... clips would be excellent, i wanted to do this sort of stuff, but im i dont think i want to rip out my stereo and redo it to get clips...
if you could PM me a rough idea of what clips u may have, then that would be greatly appreciated...
this is the stuff i was hoping for, like if anyone has good photos and/or videos then this would be greatly appreciated...
thanks fellas, keep the suggestions coming, and constructive criticism is also welcome (i guess)...

I think even if people get it and burn it, which I don't think many will do, its still getting distributed rather than being locked away. I know I would love some of the videos I made at high school to get distributed for people to watch.
I think that you should add notes such as always have a fire extinguisher when doing deadening and have one in the car at all times etc just to cover yourself.
Maybe have a section and go through "quality" products like what makes a $900 Alpine amp better than a $150 Boss amp which claims to have the same ratings.
Maybe a basic fibreglassing guide even if its not audio specific. I know I've learnt alot by reading someone writeup on making a fibreglass pond.
The importance of how to correctly run wires through a car and how to do it.
Different was of installing subwoofer enclosures and differences in loading.
Maybe put on some footage of SPL comps and alike just for fun.
I duno if this will be within your guideline specs but maybe make a computer text based one and one which is video based.
Thats all I can think of for now.

thanks, there are valid points and ideas there, but i dont think i would be able to mention specific brands or that... im not too sure, but i dont really want to include a bias opinion about brands etc...
anymore info and suggestions would be great.... though i dont have any footage of an SPL comp, unless someone wants to donate some?
everyone who donates info/pics/videos etc will be given due credit etc...
this was just a thought, (it may or may not happen) but everyone who donates pics or footage etc to me, will recieve a copy of the dvd... this is another thing i can consider and talk about on my dvd...
thanks again
oh and poisoner, read the first post again, and please take note of the text highlighted with the asterix... then reconsider what you write in the next reply... cheers mate...

ill have until about august-september next year, so plenty time...
i think ill just compile all my info in the xmas holidays, then get stuck into it every chance i have all thru next year...
no worries bout the scotch poisoner... i look after u.

keep replies coming...
cheers
god i wish we had the option to do stuff like this!
i would try and get as much video in as possible(as long as its useful). it would be a pain to rip everything out and put it back in but imho having a dvd showing a FULL install would be awesome, with all the wiring, sub enclosures, speaker\tweeter mounting etc, even though i can do all of that i would most certainly buy a copy.
blackice has written a few good tutes and theres heaps of others in there that would be pretty useful.
i reckon u should have a serious go at this, not just do it for the project\school bit but make it for n00bs out there too!

the project is moving along steadily at the moment...
though i do have a car to do an installation in, to compile *most* of my pics...
im doing an install, in a mates lancer... so, so far the dvd will feature:
* head deck installation
* installing splits in front doors
* installing coaxials in front doors
* installing speakers in rear parcel shelf
* running wiring correctly
* installing a 4ch amp for speakers
* installing a 2ch amp for sub
* how to bridge the amp
* how to tune the amps correctly
* how to design/draw/build a sub box
* how to install the sub
* dis-assemble/assemble dash components
* dis-assemble/assemble door trims and trim panels
thats what i have so far, but i will need more tutes i think, and/or more detail.
so thats my little update for now.
any more thoughts/opinions and recommendations are welcome
cheers.

I think if you can get to a car show or event and get some awesome footage of systems pumping and in their best state, just as an 'intro' to the dvd. Get the viewers interested in how the final product is achieved.

Feb 20 2006, 08:24 PM
yeh, either that, or a montage of various products, and/or installation pics, to show the end results...
yeh i understand what you mean, just it might blow up the little microphone on the camera, you know 150+ Db, on video, ouch!
LOL...
good idea though
