So my bosses get a work experience kid for engineering. Do they want him to do engineering ? Oh no, they want him to work with me. Great. WTF am I supposed to do with him ?
Can he administer networks ? No.
Can he apply the various registry hacks for Inventor after applying the Service Packs ? No.
Can he answer the called in help desk questions ? No.
What can he do ? Sit, watch me working and fetch coffee. Yay.
WHAT THE HELL CAN I DO WITH HIM ?

I've given WE kids "research projects" on the Internet (works great expecially if you have a fast Internet connection at the office)
Other stuff - get them to trouble shoot workstation problems.. update your hardware inventory.. give them some printers to setup.. a few machines to install OS's on.. document the patches on your building distributors..
(Be careful with the last one, I almost had a kid start unpatching the central distributor during peak time at one site)
Just some of the tricks I've used to keep kids busy in an IT/sysadmin kind of situation. Good luck! (They're good for sending on lunch runs, as well.)

A few of the ones I use,
Clean keyboards, mice etc.
hardware / software audit
test old hardware to see if it works, or is it really stuffed.
Get them to search the net for software keysstuff like that.

haha, i remember work experience two years ago... of course i left it to the last minute to organise something and ended up going to a dads mates work which is a surveying office. nothing but land maps and autoCAD. Spent the week dozing off to sleep whilst they worked and taking 3 hour lunch breaks
Why dont you ask the WE kid what he wants to do...if he really wants to learn stuff, then teach him as you go through your days work. If he just wants to sleep and surf the net (as i did) give him a PC somewhere out of the way and let him do that, keeps both him and you happy.
I remember when I had to do work experience at an auto elec, as part of my cert II in electronics. All I did was stand in the one spot all day, watching one of the apprentices pull down starter motors and alternators. It was the worse work experience. Oh I got to sweep the floor in the mornings, and wash the parts in a kero basin(oh didn't that make the eczma flair up). Here's me, who had some kind of idea with electronics and stuff, but they wern't informed. I did work experience at a car audio shop, and from the 2nd day, I got to do actual work.
Have you asked him what he can actually do? or is he really one of them stupid kids that your going to be stuck with for the whole week or two?

I'm thinking of giving him a PC and making him talk to our AI system all day long.

seriously have u asked him what he can do? he may appear stupid but in actual fact be a genius that can do ur job in half the time allowing u to sit on the net all day and relax
in all seriousness though, you have a duty to the younger generation trying to learn, oneday u will rely on them paying tax for your old age pension, to do this they'll need a job... if you were 10 years younger would you like being put down cleaning mice all week? no u wuldnt, u would want something u can learn from..
maybe just take it slowly with him and show him exactly what your job entails, get him to do the little things, turn your office into a production line, means friday will come much sooner with alot less work to do

What are you complaining about?
See if he can learn to top up printer/photocopier paper trays, then begin printing off linux man pages to keep him busy

I got mine to count all the hardware and software store rooms and then when he was done, make me a database with queries, forms and a html front end. That took him a week.

I came up with the raddest job for him yesterday. We have thousands of old school blue prints & plots. Problem is, someone messed them up and put 'em out of order a few years back during an office move.. we can all see where THIS is going .
The bosses didnt like the idea. I thought it was a great plan..
Oh yeah.. forgot to mention I dont really like this WE kid. The last one was good tho, wasted hours with him. Got him online, showed him CAA and a hundred other websites, and during afternoons "onsite work" was I took him downtown to shop for CD's and "demo competitions products" IE. Play PS2 at BigW

we got two atm.
a cute 'lil chicky inside da office doin' I.T.
and a young dude doin' workshop stuff with us.
so far we have used most of the following
go get us - a box of grinding sparks, striped paint, a snatch reamer, a box of pre-drilled holes, a bag of compressed air, woodcraft welding rods (hmm, could use them on me sub box... he he), a skyhook, a 9" copulating tool, and of course, to the corner store for a "long wait/weight". he he. good to be giving it out after years of copping pineapples as a young fella. the best thing is, there's years and years of it to come. mwahahahahaha.

I know this is of little or no relevance...but anyways, sometimes it sucks when WE kids leave...some of them are really cool and you wish you had a job for them...
It's always nice having someone to dictate your emails too, my old job was so much more fun when i had someone to talk to.

I had to spend a few hours with the WE kid couple weeks ago. I made him monitor my porn downloads and when they were done, to burn them onto CD. I wasn't doing much else at work...so that contributed to his work experience. So what I taught him was how to get Kazaa working and how to use Nero. Kid didn't know either...so at least he learnt how to look up porn, download it, burn it on CD and know that Private has GOOOOOOD pr0n.

man i've done lots of WE but on the student side of it. working at an IT place a couple years ago, they put me in this massive room filled with boxes and got me to assemble computers alll day long for one week. now thats good use of the work experience guy.
but yeh in some of my other placements i feel bad because i dont want to sound like an arrogant little shmuck and say i can do whatever they dish up to me. so i just try and impress and let them know i can do it. if he is really hopeless just tell him you will sign off his logbook and to just ****off ;P haahah

Had 2 work experience guys at the Apple shop this year so far, first guy I had changing logic boards and analog boards and other failed parts on iMacs within a day or two. Left me with plenty of time to browse CAA and other forums while still being paid Then later on took him onsite in the MX6 and we had a bit of fun on the hillclimb on the way there
Second guy I took onsite and got him to install the OS and set up printers and internet settings on 10 eMacs I had sold to a school. Saved me half a days menial work while I got on with the more difficult parts of the config.

You mean B@$T@RDS.. The fulla at my work experience place 3 years ago, tried making me clean up the old photocopier of theres, that they had traded in, so I didnt have to. I told him straight up.. NO!
He called the school telling them about my disobedience and then the school wanted to speak to me, I spoke to the deputy principal (Family Friend from my Oldest Brothers days) She straightened him up.
What you should do.. Give him a computer with KaZaa, A Burner and a nice internet connection. Name 20-30 games and send him to work.

LOL @ vega_man!
My work had a WE kid yesterday, he was actually quite useful First off i got him to fix this old pentium machine, then i got him to make some 30meter+ network cables (of course they had to be perfect, i think it took him 8 or so crimps on the first cable before i was happy (and he was happy, because he got some nice long network cables for when he goes to lans )
