Full Version: I Need a Digital Camera > $600

Hey there! As the topic says, I'm after a digital camera that up to $600 in price. Now I hadn't thought about buying one, but its my 21st on Monday and the old man suggested it last night. I have a mate starting in the digicam department at Harvey Norman tomorrow so could possibly source some models a little cheaper. The ones that I am currently looking at are 2.0 or 3.2 megapixel around this price range.

Canon PowerShot A60 - RRP $599
Really like the looks of this one. Has a lot of features for the price. Only uses alkaline AA batteries though Lithium can be bought seperately for about another $100.

Nikon Coolpix 2500 with Rotating Lens - RRP 599
Apparantly this is a pretty good camera with a good, rechargeable battery.

*New* Sony CyberShot DSC-P32 - RRP $595. Note that this is a 3.2 Mp camera.

Now I have pretty much narrowed it down to these three. I need a camera this is good in all lighting situation, most shots will be taken at parties etc. where the lighting is not so crash hot. I think that 2.0 megapixels should be enough for every day needs, but i guess the 3.2 Sony would be good just to have the extra capacity. I'm leaning towardst the Canon because the Nikon is not so good in terms of red-eye reduction, whereas apparantly the Canon is!

Is there any other cameras that I should be looking at. I have heard that Kodak are not good, so I haven't even bothered looking at them. Please note that my price limit is stringent! Thanks in advance!

Cheers...Mitch

You do realise that > means Greater Than. I think you meant to write < which means Less Than. Remember, the shark will always bite the bigger side, and in this case, the digital camera you want is on the side where the shark is biting, therefore your subject title implies you want a camera for MORE than $600.

Sorry, i'll shut the f**k up now.

For digital camera shopping in general...

Sort through the various models this way.

- Find the highest megapixel u can afford...
- Make sure it has rechargeable batteries.
- Does it have optical zoom?
- Look at other features.

And that is how i chose my camera, it isn't under $600 but that is how i would go about looking at most cameras, and in that order too.

If you are in parties, the optical zoom feature really isn't that important, but i use it everywhere else... Digital zoom is just BS, u can just do that on your computer

Rechargeable batteries are a MUST if u use the camera much at all. Digi cameras love sucking up batteries.

Features such as red eye reduction etc are great, however you can normally fix these problems via graphic editing later on.

Couldn't it use NiMH AA rechargeables? These are about $30 for a pack of 4 and they last ages for an AA battery.
eMitch
Yeah you are right, they can use rechargeables.

Oh and on the '>' point, notice how it is before the amount of money desired to be spent, therefore meaning up to $600. That is just my quirky way of doing things

on the coolpix 2500, funky lookin kinda camera, lots of decent features, BUT...

1:teh flash is right next to the lense... literally.. BAD for red eye...

2: no optical viewfinder, only a screen.. imo thats a bad.. i feel i can aim better with a real viewfinder, and also, imo you can hold the camera more steady if you are pressing it against your eye

3: no video output - ie. cant hook up to a TV>. not a huge issue for most ppl, but just a feature htat you might want once or twice at some stage *shrug*

4: no sound for teh video recording feature

tehy are the main rsons i dont own a digital camra today...

i recomend the nikon coolpix 2100 - exact same features and specs, but with an optical viewfinder, and its smaller (no rotating lense thingo). i believe it also has a video out (not a huge deal), and it MIGHT have a mic for video recording.. not sure though.. and fletchers fotographics are having a nikon sale atm so i dont knwo what the RRP is on these, but they are for sale for $599 atm

otherwise there was a ricoh one there that i liked there that was again pretty much the same features, bit bigger than the 2100, but it was $100 cheaper.. the reason i'd choose the 2100 over the ricoh one is cause the ricoh one takes SD cards, not compact flash, and SD cards are more expensive... haha..

also - on the batteries, go to **** smith, i htink m dad picked up 4 rechargeable NiMH AA's and a charger for around $60 or $70.. the batteries were 1700mAh, and norma AA' are 1200mAh, so you do get mroe life out of them, and i htink yo ucan get 1900-2100mAh now jsut as easily... so its worthwhile, especialy when good quality AA's cost around $8-$10 for a 4 pack depending on where you go...

hope taht helped

nick

PS: all the cameras i ahve used have been 2.0-2.1megapixel, and thats plenty for my likeing *shrug*.. so if the choice between a 3.2mp with no optical zoom, and a 2.1mp with optical zoom comes up, take the zoom, cause digital zoom licks balls.

Or just '<' looks like a L so "Less" than, haha.

This is the best site for digital camera reviews http://www.dpreview.com/ online stores are way cheaper than the department stores or digi stores. Remember to get spare batteries and as much memory as you can afford.

It shows how old my digi cam batteries are. I went to officeworks today and picked up a set of 4 Kodak NiMH 1600mAH for just $12

Thanks for all your help guys

I went in to the Camera Shop today and looked over a fiew models, and I think that I have decided on the Canon A60. I have been pretty much sold on this camera because of its manual shutter speed adjustment which I will use a fair bit for motor sport. I think that the camera should suit my needs adequately enough! RRP is $599 but can get it for $508! Last minute suggestions anyone?

Cheers and Thanx...Mitch

Thats a good choice of camera

Check out www.dpreview.com, it is an essential site when looking for a digital camera. I have the Minolta Dimage S404 myself. Don't forget it is often cheaper to import cameras.

A60 looks like a good camera though

IMO go the Fuji Zoom...

great colour and pic quality, with a 6x Optical Zoom.
