Hey ppls
Will be acquiring mahself an xbox pretty soon, and i am exploring its other uses other than playing games I used to be a hardcore gamer but i lost interest around the time the dreamcast came out so im a bit out of the loop. I know you could mod playstations to play pirate games, but i believe when you mod an x-box you can do so much more?
Any assistance is appreciated wether it be about the console itself or modding/hacking it

Yeah you can put modchips into your xbox, so you can play pirated games.
Look in your local trading post, you'll see heaps of ads in there to mod your xbox. It's not actually illegal to mod your xbox, it's just illegal to play copied games on it (sounds like the VCR's, how you can buy them but it's illegal to actually record tv progams).
You can usually buy pirated xbox games through your local trading post too, or you can just copy them yourself if you've got a dvd writer.
You can also swap the hard drive so you can copy games onto the actual xbox so you don't need to change the dvd's all the time.

i had a modchip installed as well as swapped in a 120GB HDD in my Xbox and its great. the games load sooo much faster from the harddrive and ive got about 20 xox games atm as well as around 500 snes megadrive master system and N64 roms on there. as far as gaming consoles go its the best money ove ever spent on anything like that

Although I dont endorse it, I highly recommend playing arcade on Xbox. Marvel vs Capcom 2, Xmen vs Street Fighter and most of the 2D fighters are so much better than any conversion...

Oh also dont forget that if you mod your Xbox you will not be able to use it to play network games... that is until they bring out a workaround

Yes you can, you just have to turn the chip off and have the original HDD connected as far as i know
And yeh, there will be a workaround...and there will be another network that is free instead of Xbox live, like xbox connect

You don't need to swap hard disks to copy games but you can only fit roughly 2 games on the original HD.
Check out
www.xbox-scene.com and
www.xboxhackz.comBoth are full of info and have forums too.

I just got a brand new XBOX + plus latest mods for $340. It plays DivX, Xvid, VCD...ect so I hook it up to my TV and crank it up on the stereo. So much better than watching it on my comp. XBOX Media Player is an open source so there are always new versions comming out to support all kinds of video codecs/formats. Its fantastic.
Make sure you buy an XBOX with a Samsung DVD drive (it has two holes on the loading tray). The Samsung drive will read all kinds of CDR/RW/DVD+-R/+-RW, all brands you can throw at it. The other drives (Thompson and Phillips) are fussier and there is no guarantee it'll read your backups.
Look for two holes (about size of 10 cent coin) on each side of the loading tray for Samsung drive recognition)

When you mod you XBOX - ask for newest version of XBOX Media Player, version 2.4 (just released). Mine came with version 2.3 (April 2003 built).
