I just bought a new car VW passat 2.0. and intended to re-install myself a new system in there, and i went to a car audio place (wouldnt want to mention them).
First i ask what sort of price if i want to install custom boot install.
and i ask what if i want fibre glass subbox. they said fibre glass will cost alot more from $300 to $500. and they reckon f-glass doesnt even sound as good as MDF board.
So now i am down here, with some friend and brother (who could help me) to do the fibre glass/ MDF board design.
But i still want to know, Which would be sound better in Fibre glass or MDF board
My new subwoofer would be boston G12 / Diamond
cheers

combo the two materials for rigidity and customisation and to keep the cost down some.. make the top plate with your shape and f/g and the rest of the box with mdf to reduce cost of total box.
mdf shuold be used where there is a flat piece - i only tend to glass the back curves is space is a premium and you need to save as much space as possible.

doesnt really matter what you use
aslong as the volume is correct and the material that you use is solid enough

Ply can be thinner, lighter and stronger than MDF, plus you won't get cancer cutting it

Just on a slightly related note

It might cost you an extra 50% in timber costs though.

I've never done Fibre glass sub box before, that why i wanted to give it ago,
Not sure why they said, MDF would sound better for sub than F-Glass

How many PA bins you seen made from MDF - Not many nearly all are ply. Ply is better if you get a good grade - unfortunately its expencive and a little harder to work - well dependant on what your doing with it.

its a lot harder to screw into the end of ply and get a smooth finish like MDF. I think it may have a lower density also. My brothers first box was made from ply and we used studs in all the sides to screw into. When he built a new box from MDF it sounded way better.

MDF box is easier to build, but fibreglass box would be harder to build and take longer to finish ( put more effort into it) but you can make into any shape or size.
I am not sure why they dont want to build u a fibreglass box? maybe they havent done many of them?.

IMO wont make a dfference. if u can do it then do FG as it is lighter can look so much sweeter and also takes up less room as u can have it fit exactly in the rear quarter panel etc...
wood is easier but fg looks better.
i voted FG not becasue it will "sound better" i cant tell u if it will, i voted coz fibreglass IS better for weight, and shaping...

Dont Focal suggest against using anything but mdf for its sub enclosures ?
There must be a reason for this

Use fibreglass for molding complex shapes and curves, MDF for flat areas. The problem with cheaper plywood is that it can contain voids (where knots exist in the tree for example) and this can affect the density and strength of the ply. Now you can get void free ply but it will cost you. I personally don't think its worth the weight saving nor the extra money it would cost you to use ply.

Personally I just had a custom FG enclosure made to suit a 10" in the boot and it's bloody fantastic. Downsides? Cost is the only issue, but it's a price I happily paid given the quality of the install, plus it looks stock apart from the sub being visible.

I just realised that this was a 2 year old thread. Now I'm guessing that unless the original poster is a really slow worker, the sub box would have been finished by now.
