I'm sure most of you have heard all about the copy protection scheme on certain recent Sony BMG CDs that have a 'rootkit like behavior', (security issue) which will install itself (without your permission) if you insert the cd into a windows pc and have autorun enabled.
http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/s...tal-rights.htmlWell as it turns out, the copy protection software itself happens to infringe copyright laws, since code has been used from several pieces of software which have been released under a GPL.
http://dewinter.com/modules.php?name=News&...article&sid=215http://hack.fi/~muzzy/sony-drm/http://www.the-interweb.com/serendipity/in...ents-found.htmlSony's motives are pretty clear - its position against copy protection is not about legality, or morals, it is about making money.
As a consequence, I'm sure more people will be motivated to copy Sony music after this issue.

So how does this stop me from downloading music again?
Lets face it, no matter what they do to their cd's, there will always be a way to encode them as mp3s. Even if the user has to resort to using a high quality sound card, source unit, and the line in port..

If I can hear it, I can record it

My thoughts exactly. If anything, this will deter people from buying cd's.

They definately are opening themselves up for it!
and kudos to the guy that takes advantage of them and takes em to the cleaners

Not really, but now we have incontestable proof for the skeptics.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051121/ap_on_...HNlYwN5bmNhdA--Sony has recalled the CD's, and offered a fix. But the fix still leaves huge holes apparently.

and the fix is f***ing hard to get to. Three "are you sure" screens, at least one confirmation email, its not listed on their main website, not presented on their support website unless you look for it, and if you dont do all three confirmations + email from the same comp, you have to start again.

No rootkit problems with MacOS X

Sucks what they have done to their CDs, better to just use the line-in and record it that way if things get bad enough.

Just remember, if someone is smart enought to write the protection code, there''s someone else out there smart enough and evil enough to distribute means to defeat it. Corporations can never win, not whilst there are programmers out there who disagree with what they are doing. Heard of AnyDVD? Just got the latest update and yet to find something it can't beat................

iv heard that if u put a small peace of sticky tape on the edge of the sony copy protected cd's it stops the second session on the end of the cd from running (the part with the copy protection and what not on it), and then ur pc just treats it like a normal music cd
