ok, so my cheapo Juster 3d-601 speakers are finally on the way out.
one of the small satellite speakers suddenly stopped working, i've opened it up and all the connections are still in place, i tried it in a different connection on the sub (RearLeft and RearRight instead of FrontLeft) and still nothing.
any ideas why it would suddenly die? can i fix it?
other than that, can anyone recommend some decent computer speakers for under $100?
i have been looking at the logitech x-230 2.1 system, but if anyone can recommend something else, i'd be glad to hear from them

Get yourself some Zalman 5.1 headphones, awesome sound and great for gaming too.
Advantage: You can have it as load as you want and no one gets pissed off at you

sorry, if i wanted headphones, i would have asked about them.
i'm after speakers, as
a) i like to listen to music in my room, but not necessarily at my computer, and,
B) i can take them to parties at mates place, when they dont have computer speakers

Well seeing as you require some gusto then the "best" speakers for your situation are Klipsch.
They boast the most powerful sub and satelite system for computers. You won't be able to get em new on your budget so hunt around 2nd hand or E-bay.

happened with my harmon/kardons
turned out to be a combo of two things
1) The connection in the little jack in the satellite speaker was loose.
That is, there are little "spring loaded" contacts in the headphone jack, and mine werent contacting properly. They had also bent out of place laterally.
2) the jack itself was stuffed. The front nub could slide out from the sleeve of the second section.
Replacing these two little parts (common fault) fixed it.

I have Logitech Z-640, and they SUCK! I'm on my second set, as my last ones just died for no reason. They are somewhat loud, but have NO midbass and just sound really cheap.

ok, so as much as i like the look of those klipsch speakers (thx certified and over 100wrms!!!)...i've narrowed it down to
Logitech x-230
Creative Inspire T3000
both have a lowest local price of about $70...
so, does anyone have opinions on these specific speakers, or these brands in general??

well, i picked up some x-230s yesterday and i gotta say i am impressed.
not only do they look great, but they sound amazingly better than my old speakers
my only criticism is that, for me, they are a bit dull in the highs (4k hz) onwards...but i simply eq'd them a little and now they sound great - the sub goes pretty low too while still being able to differentiate between varying sub-bass freqs, which is nice
happy ending

once you hear some of the cars and realise what music should sound like, you start comparing ALL speakers against the best you've heard.
oh and kicker, sorry but i wont be selling my old cpu - the olds want to use that pc now

Neat lil search engine for computer gear that'll making shopping for the cheapest prices so much easier.
I'm using Logitech Z-640's, not bad considering i got them like 2/2.5 yearsago and cost me about $140
If i was to choose another set of speakersi'definitely be looking into Logitech gear again.

i currently have a Creative inspire 2400 (2.1) system. Sub (4" cone) sounds great, satellites (2")are OK but far from perfect.
Next set i'll get will be pair of (1" tweet, 4"mids) studio grade speakers, along with a small sub. Don't see the point of going surround as i dont play games/movieson it, just music. ~ $300 for the lot would be the point.
Saw a nice sounding pair at Allans music but can't remember for the life of me what brand it was.
