Full Version: what a glorious day

so the day starts off at 9am when i drop the car down to the local shop to get some 'work' done to it (yeah, you'll find out tomorrow at the qualifit comp)...all going well, get back to the shop at about noon to pick it up and am quite impressed with the improvement in sound quality, though the installer turned down my gains to try and eliminate 'noise' coming from the headunit (suspected to come from there anyway).
drive off to friends place for a bbq and get roped into doing some landscaping for them at the same time (yeah, my back loved that).
anyway...start to drive home, and low and behold, the left channel starts cutting in and out (though not the addition done to the car in the morning - that is playing fine)...

bastard!

so i get home and spend the next 30mins trying to get into my dash to find the crossovers to check the connections...get there and see they're all fine and then realise - "idiot, if it sounds like a dodgy connection, chances are it wont be all four connections on the xover, it'll probably be at the amp, where there are fewer connections to go wrong."

so, put my dash back together and start pulling the rear seat out, check the power+/- connections for left channel and yep, one of the amps screw connections is connecting not to the stripped back speaker wire, but to the plastic wire covering. so i fix that, and then as i'm about to leave satisfied, i notice that the left channel rca inputs are hardly connected, in fact, as soon as i go to touch them, they disconnect. hmmm, fix that and now its all rosy...well, i'm yet to go over a bumpy road, but while sitting in the stationary car, it was all good.

man, u gotta love the things that happen the day before a comp!
c all u amateur street guys tomorrow, oh, and the rest of u of course!

Good luck tomorrow Adam!
Hope all goes well!

That sounds like a very dodgy installation to me... was it done by the original installers or the ones who did your boot??

Glad you fixed it however

original installer (and yes, i am thinking i might be going elsewhere from now on)...and being the expert installer i am (NOT!!!), my solution consisted of some well placed electrical tape around the rca connections, lol

as i said, i havent been for a drive yet to see if the problem has been fixed, but from what i saw, i think the rca's were the problem

Yes, man I would be going elsewhere. There is one thing I would love to fix on your install, is to get your headunit to fit properly, for a 30mins work, it would make a difference to the appearence, but I am a fussy basta#d.

But go the electrical tape, it fixes all smile.gif almost as useful as 100mph tape smile.gif

you coming to the comp tomorrow, or waiting till next season to show ur face?

hehe, yes i am still a little confused as to why they needed to use the filler-fluff around my deck.

when i went to pick up the car, the installer and i got to talking about how getting depth in the staging was really difficult, and he suggested that the only real way to fix it in a commodore was with upgraded speakers and upgraded headunit
he immediately whips out an eclipse brochure and suggests the top-line 8455 for about $1000, and also from the mbq brochure suggests the q-series splits for about $1600. "you really wont find anything better than these two products....but that's really only if you want to get serious about sq"
so then i got into a lengthy discussion about phass alnico's, dyn esotars, eton discovery, blaupunkt bremen, alpine 7998r, clarion hx-d2, etc...
hmmm, perhaps i taught him a thing or two about audio - but i guess he has to push his store's products as much as he can.

What's on tomorrow?? I am at Spring Car Nationals in Shepparton, for DB Drag.

Dude I promise you I could get that deck sitting right in your dash, without a hassle. There has never been one that has got me yet.

Suggestion take your car to that place that did your boot, they seem to have their heads screwed on. SQ in a Commo is hard, but it can be done. Custom kicks are certainly an option. Flush mounted ambient tweeter will fit your plastic a' pillars smile.gif Trust me, Commo's can be made to sound great, it just takes time and $$$
