Hi guys, wanted to know is it possible to run 8ohm tweeters through a 4ohm passive and 4ohm mid woofer effectively?

depends on sensitivity of the drivers in question smile.gif

if for example the tweeters and mid woofer have a sensitivity of abt 80db+ can it be done? and get a good sound?

Wouldn't the impedance difference change the crossover point?? I think Shiny_car mention this a while ago.
shiny_car
yes, passive xovers are dependent upon the impedence. if the passive xover is designed for a 4ohm driver and say, for example, provides a HP of 2kHz, changing to an 8ohm driver now makes the HP xover point 1kHz. not only would this overlap with the midbass driver, but possibly be beyond the safe operating frequency response of the tweeter, leading to damage.

basically, if you're going 'custom' like that, then customise the xovers to match, with either a new passive xover or going 'active'.

Well said you may need to look at custom passive crossover for it or simply run it active using the amps crossover or external processor's crossover network.

Easiest and cheapest option is active, IF you have the gear lying on hand to do it. may even be easiest to go active rather than getting custom crossovers built for you.

And pyroay, wake up dude, and get off the caps. tongue.gif

Hows that.... gOOD?

if you want to get away with this on a cheap, some manufactures crossovers are already 8 ohm tweeters with 4 ohm mid-woofers, polk, diamond, jl audio etc...

i have a few lying around, or ask around to a few specialist stores, surely they would have plenty hanging around in there spare parts bins.
