Full Version: Setting LPF & HPF?

I have a two seater car, which i have put a subwoofer in the boot and a set of splits in the front.

On the headunit, you can set the LPF and HPF. what should these be set to? Should i leave them as 'through' and do the filtering at the amplifier?

I dont know much about car audio tuning; should anything on the headunit be changed or just left as 'flat'?

cheers,

depends on your setup really. I use them. if you know how to set them - have a play. you wont do any harm at low levels. what unit?

the HU is a kenwood xxv-01d.

sub is soundstream t4-12; 900W rms, 1 ohm
amp for sub is ega900D, 900W @ 1 ohm

splits are trc6, 150W 2ohm.
amp is xta480.2, 2 channel, 240W rms @ 2 ohm.

would appreciate any help in setting the cross overs etc,

from the installer they set the LPF for the sub at 80hz, 12dB/oct

the HPF has been left at 'through'

if these settings are cool then i'll leave em but just wondering if its possible to tweak em to get it to sound better. I dont really want to touch it unless i know it wont blow something up.

Also - what is digital timing alignment? Do i need to set that? how can it help me? The setting is set in centimeters. Is this how far you are from the speaker?? excuse the ignorance!

Many Thanks!!

for your setup, i'd use either the xovers in the HU or on the amps, but not both. it can become messy if you use both and don't do it properly.

i'd suggest:
*HP the splits at 80Hz with 12~18dB/oct slope: what you have now sounds good; provides midbass through the front splits
*LP the sub at ~70Hz with 12~24dB/oct slope: a bit lower than the splits to avoid doubling up of frequencies being reproduced by sub/splits at the same time

time alignment is a great feature. read about it in the manual; no doubt it explains it there. because the front speakers are usually closer to your ears than the sub, i use TA to delay the fronts, providing time for the subbass to 'catch up' and arrive at your ears at the same time. this provides much better 'upfront bass' (ie: subbass sounds like it comes from infront of your ears, not back in the boot) which is much more coherent. i delay my fronts around 5~6ms (milliseconds). you can also use it for L-R adjustment; cos the R speakers are closer to you, you can delay this a bit compared with the L, so they both arrive at the same time.; you usually need to delay the R (compared with L) by an extra 0.2ms or so, not much. but experiment. if you can't hear the difference, then your ears are not very experienced, in which case just leave it alone until you learn more.

there is nothing in the manuel that really discribes how the TA works on the unit, just tells you it's there.

same as some of the other features.

the TA in the XXV-01D also only does sub and both speakers (not L & R), still dont know what it does for the fronts??

have a read of the gain setting tutorial (link in my sig smile.gif )
