Hi. I've been thinking about getting a radar detector. What is involved in installing them and how accurate are they?

Its a window mounted unit, You stick it to your windscreen and plug it into your cigarette lighter.. or you can give it constant power (12 VE+).

Keep in mind they are illegal in Vic and all states execpt WA..

I've only had expereince with Bel radar detectors and they are brilliant, range is excellent.

The XRS 9700 does all bands bar Ku, Ku isnt used in australia.

Range is frikkin AMAZING to say the least.

Last week, I was on North Rd (melbourne) and I got about 500 metres warning of the radar gun ahead. And voila, as I got closer, the gadget started going crazy and I spotted two cops hidden behind a telephone booth getting speed readings.

Ok then.... How much is the fine for having one of these in vic and how likely is it that you get caught? Just for information of course. lol

does this device warn you about cars with speed cameras in em with the beam facing towards the direction your going and not at you like a handheld, and with traffic light cameras with beam facing towards direction your goin.thanks

Tan18, I believe you are charged with Interfering with Police. Its not just a fine.. How likely are you to get caught.. well, if your using it very likely. They sit in the middle of your windscreen. They are also detectable by some radar guns.

VICTORIA - (Road Safety Act 1986) 74. (1) A person must not own, sell, use or possess a device the sole or principal purpose of which is to prevent the effective use of a prescribed speed measuring device or to detect when a prescribed speed measuring device is being used.

Penalty: 20 Units

A 05-06 Unit is 104.81, so the fine for it is $2096.40 when your caught.

AUGHIA, It will pickup any beam facing the car .. including beams from automatic shop doors..

My detector picks up the unmarked cars with mounted cameras from BOTH directions easily.
