Im not quite sure on this, and I think that alot of others arent either, but what exactly is "burping"? Do you basically pause the player, turn the volume right up, and then play for 5 seconds, then pause again?

cheers
blanketman
yep
trism
what does doing this achieve?why not press play, then crank the volume up to full power??
xplod_au
cause while ur turning the volume up with a remote the H/U and amp(s) eat little bits of power while ur turning it up from you battery.

ahh i get it.so you pause it, let the battery store up some power, then unleash the fury???

Well the battery isn't "storing up" power while it's paused.

Basically, between burps (which are usually about 1-2 seconds long not 5), you try to achieve the following:
1. Let the amplifiers cool down again
2. Connect a charging device to your batteries so they can recharge

However, you can only achieve no 2. between "runs" - usually a run is a 30 second period in which you set a score. Most competitors will burp once during a run, perhaps twice, one at the start of the period and one at the end.

The intention is that your batteries will have the most charge, and your amplifiers will be as cool as possible, before trying to set your SPL score. After all, as the amplifiers heatup and the batteries start to lose strength, you lose power and thus SPL.

Why do you burp ?

Less strain on the equipment. Running flat stick for a while takes its toll on equipment, just look at Deathmatches (and guess why they're called that).

Heat. The amount of heat generated in the subs coils on a burp is nuts, and pumping mass power into the coils for extended periods will cause failures. Same as internally for the amps, FET's heat up and if they heat up enough they can smoke.

Ever noticed how amps make more power at 2ohm than 4 ? Heat increases resistance, IE. impedence goes up, which means power goes down.

The power the battery can deliver is finite. In all Street classes the equipment relies on battery power only, and very limited quantities of them. Slap a multimeter on an amps terminals and watch the power drop during a burp. A 13V float very quickly becomes 10V when the amps suck down the current over a 3 second period. (My Crown drops 2 Odyssey 1500's from 13.8V float to 9.5V after 2 seconds of burping).

Low battery voltage can kill amps, look at the D2's smokey history.. get them under 10V and the smoke comes out.

So to sum it up, burping is done because thats all the time the meter needs, its easier on the amps & subs, its safer, it maximises power.

Okay so my headunit doesn't have a pause button wtf!!!!
JVC KD-SHX705

It's a good unit too :/

And do you burp just before clip/max power of sub or can it be a clipped signal? Does clipped signals reduce SPL output
tuneman
does it have a mute button? some have that instead.

clipped is a tricky one, generally speaking a clipped signal will yeald a slightly higher reading, for me it was about .3 -.5 db more in my normal car setup but in the extreme car any squarewaves caused a loss! weather because of the design of class d amps or just something to do with the wave formation in the car i dont know :|

i think its a better idear to get a good clean signal first, get your setup working to its optimum then when you've got i better idear of how everythings working and have a bit more experience on the meter then you can consider trying other little things to help improve your score.

and yes the clipped signal is bad for your subs but when used in moderation they'll last forever, i used nothing but my squarewave disk for like 6 years for comps in the old dunnydore!

mute button, it'd seem. Thought I'm pretty positive when u turn vol to highest it turns volume on, or if you mute at high volume, un muting goes does to moderate loud im pretty sure.
Would skipping through tracks while turning vol up be best option?

you have a power button dont you?
turn your head unit off it will retain the placing then turn it on for a burp

Give me a can of coke.. then stand back tongue.gif hahahaha

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I have the same HU.
To do the pause, just hit the SOURCE button on the remote when you have the track up to the point where you want it to pause. It'll then go to line-input which will be silent if you have nothing on line-in. To resume, hit the SOURCE button *twice* (hitting it once changes to radio) and it'll resume CD playing right where it stopped. There will be a couple of seconds delay as it spins up the CD again so factor that in when you burp.
It doesn't have a proper mute button, instead it has attenuate so that's not the best way.
Turning the HU off and on is not good either as you'll power off the amp and have to wait for amps to power up again and go thru its anti-pop etc.

excellent idea warboat.

as for amps turning on you wire the remote wires to the b+

That's any idea warboat. My other option was turning vol um while skipping through tracks. Good stuff.
