Hye guys, im in the market for a mono laser printer.

Im going to be using it to bascially print uni notes for this year. No photos, nothing too detailed, but want a nice reliable printer to do the job. I probably will print around 50 sheets a week.

I've narrowed the choice down to:

Brother 2040 - $150
Canon LBP 3000 - $170
HP 1020 - $150

Has anyone had any experience with any of these? I want to keep the price under $200 so please dont suggest more expensive printers.

Only thing is, plenty of reviews on the net have commented that the Brother causes paper curling, even with expensive thicker paper. For that reason, I dont think it would be a good choice, However, it has 8Mb internal memory, a 250 sheet tray and 20 ppm.

The Canon and HP have only 2Mb memory, 150 sheet input and print 14ppm.

Cheers!

Could mods please delete the doubling up of this post? Sorry

I've found a 4th printer to add to the list.

Samsung ML 2010 - $149

Reviews say it performs very well, with and output of 22ppm, 150 sheet capacity and 8Mb ram. However, it uses USB 1.1. Would that be a problem?

Wouldnt think so. USB 1.1 is still quicker than LPT1 AFAIK and theres still alot of LPT1 printers in offices doing a wonderful job and not causeing any problems with speed. also with 8m ram thats pretty damn good for a desktop printer

have you checked out the price of replacement toner?

this may sway your decision one way or the other wink.gif

I wasn't sure where to find prices for toners. Although, the Samsung comes with a free 4000 sheet capacity toner

4000 sheet toner with a $150 printer. that works out to less that 4c per page inc the printer doesnt it? even if it was cheaper to replace the printer afterwards than get a replace ment toner thats still cheap!
also lasers tend to respond better the toner refils than inkjet

Actually, it comes with a 1000 sheet toner with the printer, and you get a 3000 sheet toner free. So 4000 sheets all up.

IM leaning towards this Samsung. Its cheap, professional reviews have said it performs very well, and it comes with free toner.

Hi,

I work in the industry and I my self was recently looking for a laser printer to do almost the exact job you want to do.

I purchased an HP Laserjet 4L from a lady on Ebay for 40 $ with toner, ask anyone in the industry these are very solid printers.(Toner has a cycle life of 25000 pages I think)

She had a whole bunch of them for sale if you would like I can try and look for her contact number, she is located in VIC.

Otherwise if you really want a new one, the HP or Samsung are a good choice.

Ciao !
