Young lovers charged over bid to kill parents

A TEENAGE girl recruited her boyfriend to kill her parents in their Brisbane home so the young couple could continue their romance, a court was told yesterday.
Joshua Andrew Hockey, 18, of Bellbowrie, was refused bail when he appeared in the Brisbane Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with conspiring to murder and attempted murder of his girlfriend's parents at their Newmarket home on Saturday.
The girl, 15, was charged with the same offences and was bailed by the Brisbane Children's Court yesterday.
She must live with her aunt and uncle and have no contact with her boyfriend until her next court appearance next month.
Prosecutor Senior Sergeant Mark Gorton opposed Hockey's release, saying the allegations were "nothing short of bizarre".
He alleged the young couple met on the Internet, before the girl hatched a plan to get Hockey to murder her parents.
The 18-year-old then attacked his girlfriend's father in his own bathroom at the weekend, holding a knife to his throat and struggling with him but he only managed to stab himself in the leg, the court was told.
Sen-Sgt Gorton said Hockey was full of bravado in his police interview, suggesting he was a hitman who had killed before.
"This plot was not on the spur of the moment – it was hatched over days," he said.
Defence lawyer John Jacob said his client had no previous convictions and had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder at a young age.
Mr Jacob said it was not an uncommon fantasy for young people to be rid of their parents, and claimed the girl wanted to be rid of hers so she could be free to see Hockey.
He claimed the girl's parent had put obstacles in young couple's way, and that when Hockey saw injuries on his girlfriend, he believed they were caused by her parents.
Mr Jacob said that after his client struggled with the girl's father, he sat down on the floor and began talking about how stupid he had been.
"It was a fantasy that largely got out of control," he said.
Magistrate Jacqui Payne yesterday refused to grant bail, saying there was an unacceptable risk Hockey would reoffend.
When I first read this I couldn't stop laughing! I went to school with this guy and never in my life did I think him capable of this kind of thing. Feel free to notice where he lives, and also where I live. Judges watch out! Full points to me or death...
Best part was that he stabbed himself in the leg. That's how to kill someone, injure youself. That's my story for the day.
