Hi Guys.

Been slowly building up my system in my 2003 BA Falcon SE Ute.

Currently system is running like this.

Alternator: 110 Amp
Battery: Standard original battery.
Capacitors: None.
Deadner: 20 Square metres of Brown Bread, 2-3 Layers depending on location, Complete Cabin Covered.
(hey I have a ute with 750kg payload, who cares about 25kg of deadner? lol)

Deck: Eclipse 8053 (8V Preout, internal active X/overs, 10 Band Para EQ, Time Alignment)
Volume available 0-80, Loudest listening volume set at 65.

Front Stage:
Midrange: Focal 165K2p, 63hz 24db HP, 3.15 24db LP, 125W RMS per speaker via Soundstream VGA500.4 Gain on Amp set at 0, (can't actually turn it up, not needed)
Tweeter: Focal TN52, 3.15hz 24db HP 125W RMS per speaker Via Soundstream VGA500.4 Again Gain on amp set at 0. Tweeters reduced 4DB from midrange on head unit.
Amplifier: Soundstream Van Gogh 500.4 125W RMS X4 @ 0.02% THD >500 Damping factor.
X/Over: Eclipse 8053 Internal Active X/Over.

Subwoofer:
Speaker: Focal K2 Series 27KX 11" subwoofer 300w nominal 600w max
Amplifier: Soundstream Van Gogh 800.2 1 x 800W RMS @ 0.02% THD >500 Damping Factor.
X/Over: Eclipse 8053 internal Active 80HZ 24DB LP Soundstream Internal Active 30hz 24DB HP
Box: 20 Litre 18mm MDF Sealed.

Additional Info:

Subwoofer mounted Central in the cab, firing at the front windscreen/dash over the centre console.
Midbass in stock location, however door modified, deadend, speakers mounted on 25-30mm of MDF Build up, which is bolted to the door solid. (stock location is forward Mid/high in the door)
Tweeters mounted in Stock Premium system BA Falcon location (in the pillars above the dash) equal length from users ears as centre of midbass. approx 1-1.5ft from the midbass.

tweeters have separate time alignment, and separate 5 band Para EQ, Separate volume control.
Midranges have separate Time alignment and Separate 5 band Para EQ. Separate volume control.
Woofer has separate Time Alignment, And Phase control. Separate volume control.

I've tuned and tuned, it's all awesome.

The bass is incredibly accurate, but I'd like to increase output,
suggestions are to move to a 30 litre box and fit plain chant?? any ideas on that?

is a capacitor worth it?
is a sealed battery going to be a improvement when I have 110 amp alternator?

The amps are all running very high effeciency, my total system at MAX draws only around 60-70 amps total.
but thats pretty rare for me to push it that hard.

thanks for reading my crap

I don't think fitting the plain chant will help at all, as I think it is meant for speakers to disperse standing waves and wont actually make much (if any) to a sub. But I could be wrong.

Generally the consensus is that capacitors don't add anything to the system except bling. So if you want a bit extra then go for it biggrin.gif I'd personally spend the cash on a bigger deep cycle battery like an optima D34M.

Maybe move to a ported box if possible, this may help. I don't think this sub is a particularly high output sub though, but someone else may be able to add more to it.

How do you find the VGA amps? Does the 2 channel load down to 2ohms?

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm sure someone else will be able to answer your questions.

Cheers

The design of my box puts the sub within 10cm of the rear wall of the box, I'm told this creates alot of standing waves, and that the plain chant would help greatly reduce this. maybe someone else has a idea?

I know the 27KX isn't high output, but it's just a few DB down on what I'd like atm. it's only designed to be run in Sealed enclosures, not sure if it would work with a Ported, and I don't exactly have many shape options.

As for the Van Gogh Amps,
they are the Last of the Hand Made in USA Soundstream amps, before it all went to china.
The power output is good, the Damping is simply incredible, the control the amp has over both my speakers
and my sub is nothing short of amazing, I had a crossfire similar amp on the sub before and it was just plain total junk by comparison when listening and even watching the subwoofer.

The amps are crystal clean on my mids/tweeters too, very very little EQ Required on the TN52s, when most people complain about focal I think it's alot to do with the amplifier and setup, or lack of tuning knowledge or capability.

I'm really wondering how much of a difference upgrading my power system is going to make.
I Don't get any light dimming now.

I would've thought the BA has a higher output alternator than that as standard - like 150 or so.

But anyways, as for sound improvements,

The sub box could be bigger. Focal say you could go up to 40litres sealed. It would make it play lower and be less peaky. If it's not already, have the front and back of the subbox at different angles so the sub doesn't fire squarely into the rear of the box. This will help heaps with standing waves and cancellation. The less square it is the better. Ported would require a bigger box but it seams focal don't recommend it and i don't think you can fit it in.

I would consider angling your mids and tweeters. Have them facing directly to the headrest on the opposite side of the car. Just make up a different shaped baffle. You can test what difference this would make by playing some good music and moving your head from its normal listening position forward and down directly in front of the speakers.

Plain Chant is a good thing to put in your doors behind the mids. This is where it would be most noticeable. I have it in my doors, but I didn't do a before and after so don't know for sure how great a job it's doing.

where abouts is the premo tweeter spot? i haven't seen it in mine yet.

The stock BA Falcon has 80 amp alternator, the Utes have 110.. thats a pretty decent alternator, given most cars have 60 ampers. (AU falcon for example, most jap cars)

I've put as much angle as I could afford to on the front face,
I'm yet to try a bigger box, thats a last resort.

As for the mids/tweeters.. this would require custom work, and to be honest they sound great and the imaging is fine, maybe there is improvement to be had maybe not.. No doubt I will try that at some stage!

I bought 2 boxes of plain chant today, and put 10 pieces in my sub box on 4 of the walls as reccomended.
There is a Noticeable difference is lower distortion, and slightly higher output, The Bass did sound alot different so a retune is now neccessary, I just double sided taped them into the box, so I can take them out and put them in another box another day. I've kept 6 pcs for my K2P's and will fit on the weekend.

as for the stock premium tweeter positions, Just measure from your ear to the middle of the stock door mount, then measure the same distance to the front pillar, maybe add/take 1-2 cm thats where it is.. (pretty low in the pillar, dash level, maybe 2 inches up)
