I just had to reinstall XP on a friend's computer. Thing is, when I run the setup program from within XP, it goes through the procedure then resets to a menu where I choose either to startup XP or to run setup. In the setup I chose to reinstall windows. There were 2 partitions, the 60Gb one and an 8Mb one. I had to choose the 60Gb one obviously. It then said that Windows was already installed there and do I want to overwrite it.

So I had to do it that way with all of the cr@p left behind in the Program Files directory.

I tried using a Win98 floppy boot disc to boot up the PC so that I could then try setting up from DOS. But I found out that the setup program has to run from Windows. Another thing is when I did boot up with that floppy I tried switching to c: and was told that there was no such drive... WTF!

So I couldn't even format c:

How should I have gone about this?

hehe funny you should mention installing xp, im sitting here installing it on one laptop to my right, using the middle one (here), and installing w2k on a desktop on my right...yeh computer nerds rock man

anyway after all that crap you went through, why didnt u just boot to the cd rom? trash the partitions and get xp to format them before it starts, choose your file type, and vola easy as much better, quicker, and simpler than trying upgrading and repairing which practically never works...or when it does it cracks the sads a week later and you have to kill it anyway

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether the boot disc could do that. Oh well.

Thanks for the reply

I had to reinstall XP on the neighbours PC the other day coz they had that "Bloody blaster virus"

Then next thing it was back after i had completely wiped everything and started over

So i just put 98 SE on I prefer that and so do the neighbours.

XP SUX

I have had nothing but greif with XP machines.

The original look for XP is so gay it reminds me of sesame street or sumfin

I changed to all orig win98 look and i still hated it bloody errors left right and center cant delete sumfin coz its "IN USE" But really its not.

Once again XP SUX

Well I'm going to go and sit over on the "we love xp" fence becasue you say its giveing you errors all the time, but geeesh win98 thats just asking for errors. No offence but you obviously need to do a little more playing with xp and get some grips on it, I'm not trying to say your a newbie, but I've oversean many XP rollouts to SOE (standard operating enviroment) in production and home enviroments and there isn't any issues on a whole, especially now that the drivers are out there and certified to boot (if your too much of a wuss to use non certified driver )Some older software and hardware doesn't like it too much but most stuff has firmware updates now. Do your self a favor and persivere a little with it. And hey theres always windows blinds if you want to be different, some of em rock pretty hard.

Only thing stabler than the xp machines that I've delt with is my mandrake box *free plug for the penguin*

I have too use XP on my machine at work been using it for a while now.

I often get an errror saying u cant delete this file its in use by another program

it pisses me off coz it aint open not even in the background.

Also some times ill try to get into a directory and it says this directory does not exist even though it shows it there then i reboot and wallah i can get into it.

Now if that aint bugs then what is.

I vary rarely have probs with 98SE.
