R-Type Man
hey

recently got the following:
head unit: Alpine CDE 9843
front speakers: Alpine SPS-171A
rear speakers: Alpine SPS-170A
amp: Alpine MRP-F240

and i was after some advice for tuning it....i've had a play around with everything on the head unit and amp to get it sounding nice and clear with some bass but i can't seem to get the right outcome. is there anything in particular i should be paying attention to?

any advice or suggestions would be awesome.

thanks
Dogo
reset everything back to flat settings.

Then start with the xovers and then set the gains on the amps.
there are tutes on this site on how to do that.

With the xovers, you want to set a high-pass on the splits so that they cut out the very low frequencies.
You may be tempted to keep them running low but its a bad idea - they'll just distort when you turn it up.

Start with a high-pass of 80 maybe and as you set the gains you can adjust and see what setting suits the speakers.

Once thats done you can play your fave music and adjust the HU eq and time alignment if it has it.

the V-power F240 amps has fixed-frequency xover filters (not variable) set at 80Hz. this will suit those speakers fine. but try them out: try with the HP filter on then off. you'll notice an obvious difference. with it 'on', you'll lose some bass, but they will sound clearer and go much louder before distorting. with the filter 'off', the bass will be back, but you won't be able to go as loudly before they complain, and will distort earlier due to overexcursion of the cones from all the bass.

refer to the tute in the FAQ section about tuning the gains:

that HU has very limited scope with tuning, but you can adjust the bass/treble controls and loudness to suit your listening tastes. but obviously realise that speakers this size and quality are NOT designed for reproducing subbass loudly. so you cannot ring out big bass no matter how hard you try; and as above, the more you try, the earlier they'll distort.

if you want more bass, you'll need a sub.
