I'm setting up a removeable roof rack on my commodore sedan. I'm gonna set up 4 big **** (130 watt)driving lights on it for my country driving.
I was wondering how i should wire it up? I have done lights before- this time i'm just gonna put in a switch and not worry about the highbeam conection!
I can wire the earth as one wire withe the 4 conecting to it. But can i do that with the power as well? and what should i use for the conectors when i take the rack off?

ok, i believe legally the spotlights must be wired soi taht they can only come on with the highbeams.
but you can puta switch on so that they can be switched off when the highbeam is on.
this is just a simple relay anyway.
you need a high current relay, and i'd just suggest 4 gauge cable to power the lights, you only need 2 wires, one positive and one earth, then use a DB to split it on the rack.
stinger make a connector for this purpose

will handle up to 150A and takes 4 gauge.

p.s. you might get away with 8 gauge but i wouldn't recommend it over such a long run. i think you'll be drawing 50A or so constantly which is a bit of a strain for 8 gauge, and you'd get some voltage drop.

yeah i think i'll stick with 4G - i dont mind coz i'm going to run some sleeve over all of it so its all neat and tidy. Gonna do this once right these lights cost heaps!
I know bout having to wire it to the highbeams by law and the switch. I've had plenty of these set ups before on 4WD's. just never 4 in a row on the roof of a sedan.
I think i'll just run it from the battery thru a switch and fuse and thats all?
That conector looks sweet too!
so its ok to run just 1 power wire (i think its series or is it parrel). so i have one wire running to the last light with the other 3 tapping into the same wire? is that right?

it's actually parallel, and it'd be easiest to use a distro block, 4gauge in and 4X 8gauge out.
you will need a relay,
you can't run 50a or more through a switch.
using the highbeam wire to activate the relay is easy,
then you can have a switch in that switch wire if you want to stop it from activating the spotlights.
it's really easy.

yeah i think i'll do the right thing and run it thru the high beams! i have done it before. But i already have a 6 ch amp in the boot, and a set of little driving lights (these are running as a swithc only but turn on if any lights are on) in the bumper bar at the front all running off one batt.
The distro block? what u mean - cant i just run 4 wires in one and then put that heat shrink over it!

When he means a distro block, goto jaycar and ask for a 4guage input 4x 8 guage output one, there a car audio item, Have you ever tried soldering 4 runs on 8awg to a 4awg lead, there no safe way you can do it with that size wire.

ok yeah i figured it would be something like that. What size are we taking here? coz i would have to mount this somewhere on the roof rack near the lights. dont want it to be too huge or subject to probs from rain etc.

Overhead driving lights are illegal, they need to the the same height or lower than the OEM headlamps... any over that are "decorative" and cant be switched on.
No I don't know why, I've just had many a 4WDer complain to me about it.

ok guys i have done at least 8 sets of overhead lights already 2, 4 , and a set of 6 for mates. 2 were not through the highbeam and the rest were. I have neva had a prob with the wiring. I have neva done and set of removeable lights. and neva on a sedan. that's the reason i asked.
Far as i know they are legal (in VIC) and i have been pulled up driving many cars with OH lights and had the cops go thru and pin mr for all sorts of **** . Cheacked the lights were part of the high beam and that was fine. I do know that u can have an uneven amount of foward faceing lights! eg. the old single bull light on the top bar!
Finding out about this distro block and the plug were handy and i'll use that advice thanks guys!

ok ok its mostly all done now.
things changed a tad. For now i have 2 lights on the rack which are rock solid and neat as a pin with wiring.
the only thing u see inside the car is the conector all wire hiden of course.
i have a nice red illuminated switch and i have the relay all hooked up and ready to go with a fuse and all the good gear.
One prob that is pissing me off so f*****g bad!
i cant find which wire to connect to for the highbeam??? any ideas.
I have a 93 VR commy sedan. I have been thru the bloody books and the diagrams for the wiring and tried the wire(s) that it was spose to be with no luck!
