can somebody please explain to me why they would be so expensive??is at all about the bling factor, or do they have some sort of audio miracle??

That glass they're using could get pretty pricey, if it is similar to bp glass there could be as much a 2grand worth in each box...
Then assume they are expensive mids and expensive tweets, what around 3k, throw another 1k for cross over, another 500 for some classy terminals and bit of bling, and there you go $8,500 worth of product + $9,500 worth of profit!! something like that would be how the price gets up there.
Suppose they are trying to recover the cost that has gone into design/developement of them, if a company spent 6-12months producing them, and are looking to aim them at the high end (ie low amount of sales) then they'd have to try and sell them to pay for that years work. Mate have a look at most speakers, the money you spend doesn't relate to the pieces that make up the component (except those $30 jobs at supercheap) the money is for the quality and research that has gone into the product.

Wonder what sort of phasing issues would be faced with the woofer and tweeter mounted on different planes like that...?

^^^^I thought the same thing tweeter and mid on different panels probably really screw with the sound

maybe the crossover employs some added group delay, requiring the offset to correct.
beign a horn, the accoutsic distance is less than the physical distance due to compression in the throat.
