Hey Peoples,

This is way of topic but i wanna what peoples thoughts are on this...

I have a mate who is dead set certain he has seen a ghost? He lives in this house that is almost 100 years old on this property out past toowoomba, apparently the part of the house burnt down and killed an elderly couple in the 1930's. Meh, it sounds to cliche for me.

Now I am very sceptical about this and dont really have any thoughts on this apart from the fact that he maybe be delusuinal or watching too much X-Files.

So what do people think - are ghosts real? Anyone have an encounter? or a story that will make me believe?

Cheers
Craig.

I personally believe that sometimes there's something "there" or around you that makes you feel like someone else is around - not necessarily real, but simply your mind being "bored" and turning noises into an event.......
However, before we bought this place, an old guy died in his lounge chair... We have changed things around a fair bit, and added a dividing wall into the room that he died in, one night, about 3 mths later, we have some wierd banging that went for HOURS and HOURS started at about 3am, it felt like it was thudding the floor, but we checked EVERYWHERE and it couldn't be heard outside, however, we could feel it in the floor at that end of the house... We were spooked... Generally at night that door is left open now, lol, just in case, i dunno, maybe he didn't know the wall was there and he was trying to move around? i dunno, wierd... i guess there's something, not sure, ghosts, etc, but alot of people believe in them!

Its freaky when **** like that happens, i believe stuff like that does happen, but i don't believe in ghosts, afterlife or anything, i reckon everything can be explaned. It's just an excuse people use to explain something that they don't understand.
km
I agree with SupraSwift People attribute it to ghost when they cannot find the cause.

Just think about why ghosts only appear at dark. Becuase that is when people cannot see properly and their imagination run wild. If the same "spooky event" (weird noise, or someone suddenly appears/dsiappears) takes place at 10am I believe most people won't relate it to ghosts.
DrEvil
I am sure there are ghosts...

But when most stuff happens it is just a cat jumping on the fence or whatever...
Rattlehead
I've never seen a ghost - but I reckon it be cool to see one. But only if it didn't try killing me or anything.
Marc
I don't believe in ghosts, well not the casper or ghostbusters type ones anyway.

I do believe in spirits though, and afterlife.
Ribfeast
'Ghosts' are the devil's 'angels' (or demons if you like) who impersonate people who once lived, sometimes for malicious purpose. They are what you talk to if you are one of those silly people who play with ouija boards etc.
Hyena
I live in a house thats about 50 years old and previous occupants have claimed it's haunted. Several times of a night I've heard footsteps coming down the hallway or up the stairs. I've never taken much notice coz there's usually other people around but since I've been living by myself it's become an issue!!!
Discounting ghosts, I put it down to my house and the neighbors on either side being built on one big rock ledge. I reckon it's the sound/vibrations traveling thru the sandstone.
Or it could be just ghosts
My dad brought the house when he was in his early 20s and had a few parties there. On a few occasions people fell down the stairs and claimed that it felt like someone had pushed them (when there was no one there) My mum a few years later also fell and broke a rib. The stairs are ordinary old stairs. I put my mums fall down to it being first thing in the morning and her still being half asleep and the party ones from people being p1ssed!

I've pretty much got a logical answer for everything, altho I can't explain the blood soaked carpet that mysteriously appears every full moon and is gone the next morning...
I'm more inclined to believe in aliens than ghosts.

Without trying to sound a bit fruity, I'd say there is something to all this ghost stuff.
I know I've seen a few things that can't be explained and I'd rather not share on here coz you'd all think i was a bit coo coo..
I'll be the first person to try and pass it off as a problem with the electricity or something that sounds more reasonable.... but yet still wouldn't explain why it happened.
But as far as I'm concerned, I keep as far away from all that ghost stuff and trying to conjour up crap....it's all too nasty pasty for me!!
Marlin
Nah we won't tease you what have you seen? I personally thinks its a load of bullsh*t some people have overeactive imaginations.
Bodyjar
I think ghosts are about as real as Pam andersons boobies
Sigmeister
I don't really believe in any of that stuff. Ghosts, spirits, God, afterlife. I would be interested to know whether the people who said they don't believe in ghosts, believe in god? Seems a bit contradictory if you did.
People will always believe what they want, and some people are very passionate about it. I personally believe people believe in things because it either puts them at ease or makes them happier.

A few times i've tried the ouija board with my mates, what we did was we got one mate to draw it up and scramble the numbers and letters around, the rest of us closed our eyes and put our fingers on the coin....

and to our amazment..... Nothing happened.....
Nothing happened when we looked at it either..

I heard its not good to abuse and swear at the spirits if its not working.... but hey ...
BlackIce
I believe in ghosts but ghosts I cannot see, Ghosts are living in my house and making fun of me .

I attribute most of it to hyperactive imagination.. the only thing you should fear at night is someone with one even more active than yours, and very stupid with access to a gun . Lord knows if I had a shotgun and got rolling.. man

Loud thumping and banging can usually be attributed to water hammer in the pipes, the metal in the roof expanding/contracting, floor boards creeking into place now that people aren't walking on them and foundations settling which causes the floors & walls to shift. Happens all the time at my house.

Walking noises.. well, I've never heard it before so I can't attribute it to anything aside from hearing things or animal activity. Bloody birds in the roof >:/.

As for "seeing things", there's some interesting theories as to why that happens.. one is that massive EMF influence on your body can actually cause your brain to "short circuit", and memories accidentically get passed to the part of the brain that see's. So you brain get's two messages, what you actually see and what you remember. If you remember someone walking past you, you're brain will combine that with what you're actually seeing.
Old castles are meant to be haunted... they say that 'cos they're made of whopping big slabs of granite or sandstone, that when the stones grind against each other (which they do constantly thanks to gravity) they cause a big EMF discharge. Which shorts you brain waves etc etc.

The other theory is its just low blood sugar causes you to see things.. which is pretty true. Try doing the 40 hour famine and you'll start seeing all sorts of crazy stuff like foo fighters and black spectre's (light spots & dark blobs)

Up here in central qld, there’s a few places that have been around over 100 years, and a few are rumoured to be haunted.
On one property, in the workers quarters, one of the rooms is haunted, and apparently one guy started work on the property, moved some of his kit into the room, decided to move the bed a bit, and woke up in the middle of the night to find that one end of his bed had been picked up and was being moved back to where it was….. he left immediately, and didn’t stay long enough to grab his gear.
A friends place in town, it’s over 100 years old, and has only had one guy die in it, but ol Cyril has caused some havoc…..
One son has walked out of his room in the middle of the night (his room was the one the old guy died in) and has had something grab his shoulder, push against his chest, and once he walked out and he says it was just like he walked into a wall.
His fiancée woke up one night when he was away, and saw a figure standing at the base of the bed, the next day, she drew a photo of what she saw, and her fiance’s mum said it looked identical to Cyril, and pulled out a pic to match…..
They installed a security screen door over the back door several years ago, and the first night something was banging against it like crazy till they opened it, and after that it’s never made a sound since….
For my slice of proof, I was around there one night, and I could smell pepper steak cooking, and I couldn’t smell it outside.
The strange part? The only member of the family that ever liked pepper steak was old Cyril….. and he loved it.

Then again….. some places I’ve walked into, gone less than 5 feet, turned around, walked out and refused to go back into…..

So, how many people coped shivers up their spines reading these posts? I did. Love it.

I reckon that there's a lot of things that could be explained when people say it's ghosts. I've never had a spooky experience like stuff where someone died decades ago. I did however this strange episode.

Went out on the town with a bunch of friends and one of the guys said that he'd drive home but I knew he'd had too much to drink so I drove him. He was worried as we had church in the morning and he'd not be able to get their if he didn't have his car. So, I promised to pick him up, we'd go to church and get the car afterwards. Simple, except I didn't get home till 3ish, had a long day at work the day before and slept through my two alarms. Anyway, I was sound asleep and I here this voice 'get up' and copped a double tap on the shoulder. It sounded like my father and he's done this before but he was a sleep. I believe it was God or the Holy Spirit. One of the alarms was still going off.

I agree with Ribfeast, I reckon that spirits are out there and shouldn't be messed with as they are probably evil and you won't know that until it's too late. The Devil will sugar coat anything and everything that's for his purpose.

I reckon I've seen UFO activity though. That was one strange night.

Yeah, they're called ex-girlfriend's houses...

But ghosts, spectres, spooks, aliens, black cats who are really witches named Wendy etc may, or may not exist... But I think we all have more to worry about

You have to believe in aliens. When you look at how many stars are in the sky (and they're just the close ones we can see) and think that each one of those has a crapload of planets orbiting it it's an almost certainty that life other than that on this planet exists. Whether they're green and have the technology or desire to fly here and anal probe us is another thing

If I was going to believe in god it'd be a stargate type approach where 'god' is one of the above mentioned aliens as his powers were his superior technology.
churchy
you can buy anti-flame materials that you coat over stuff to stop them from catching fire. just talk to any stunt man and ask him what the **** he puts on his face before running around in a ball of flames is.
Mr_Bob
I've "felt" spirits before, and had quite a few "paranormal" experiences which aren't really abotu ghosts.

the spirits i've felt have made me light headded and dizzy, usually in old musty smelling buildings,

one of which i felt in a specfic corner of my mate's kitchen. One of his mates explained having the exact same experience in the same spot (he was telling me of his experience before i mentioned mine)

go figure.
VL Commy
Totally agree with mr_bob and the spirits.

There are 'spirits' that have left me feeling rather lightheaded and left me with a dizzy sensatioin. I then woke up the next morning with a sore head, a vague recollection of what had happened and no bloody idea where i am.

I'll put my story out there for you all to bag **** out of it if you so please.....

I am a beleiver in things super natural but I am speaking from a very holistic family where dad swears he dreams stuff before it happens and I do the same a lot of the time which is more then freaky when it happens every two or three weeks. Point and case was I have not seen a mate for 6 mths as he moved to NZ spent all night dreaming about seeing him and he shows up on the doorstep the next day with no prior warning just to suprise me. Freaky $hit Number One.

My Aunty who is a very big beleiver in all this, went all John Edward on me in the lounge room one afternoon enjoying the footy. Late in the 3rd Quarter the Lions are up by about 60 points and she stops and tells me that there was a very short and kind looking old lady sitting on my back deck wanting to speak with me. I never had grandparents they all passed away before I was born and I ended up with adopted grandparents that were freinds of family who filled the role for us. Dawn was my "grandma's" name who had passed away about 3 weeks prior to my aunty visiting (never met each other mind you).

Dawn was about 4 foot 6 and the most textbook looking lovely old lady you could lay eyes on. Have pictures if need be to prove it. She had a fetish with colour coding her pegs as she hung out the washing (blue side of the clothes line, red side of the clothes line etc) that was a personal joke between her and mum (long story relevant at the end I promise).

Aunty then told me that this certain old lady was happy to see us at her funeral (travelled 14 hours by car for the funeral with mum, stayed 12 hours at destination and returned home) and that I had to take care of mum from now on. End of conversation.

Aunty then has another encounter with the little old sweet lady when she is out walking the next day with Mum near the beach. Message is along the lines of much the same as mine that it was great we made it to her funeral and that she could always trust Gordon to look after her and that she would visit her regularly. Now my aunty is no fruit cake, drives a nice AC Cobra Replica, enjoys a beer and a laugh etc etc. Not a weirdo by far but has this freaky **** going down.

The same trip my aunty tells us of a Maori spirit that was wandering around the backyard at random throughout the day. We have a rather large body of water in our backyard that supplies our Plant Nursery with water and live in Tanawha (The Maori word for Water Monster). Freaky $hit Number Two.

Had a "shuffler" in my house as an adolescent teen (whom apparently attract spirits a lot). Shuffling noises constantly in my bedroom when dark and something playing with my door knob. Turn on light and noise stops. Turn lights off and noise starts. This went on for about 3 months and I thought I was starting to get a little cuckoo so went and got the sister and the mother to confirm for me by writing down what they thought they heard after a night in my room and all thougths were the same about the carpet being walked or shuffled over (blunt scraping noise on carpet like dragging your feet on carpet) and a rattley door knob. Freaky Number THREE.

Freaky Number FOUR was when freinds of mums that are into this Reiki stuff also came to visit when we were in our old house (the same place that the Shuffler visited at night) and they made comment on walking in to my room about a playful spirit that appeared to be chained to something on the ground in my room and couldn't get out.

Freaky Number Five was when the same people came to our new house and commented on the Maori man wandering about our Dam in the backyard and the short lady who liked to stand by the clothes line.

well i have seen a ghost. it lived in my friends car. i borrowed his car one day, looked in tha mirror, when i looked back he was gone.....

one day i was with my mate, and he said to me 'hey....have u ever seen anything wierd in my car' and i was like.......'errrrrrrrr...like what?'

'well i kinda see this guy in tha mirror sometimes'

and i freaked..... we then both described him...

that car got ass ended and crushed about 12 months later. I hope he 'survived' or moved on whatever ghosts do. we always used to talk to him, and tell him to move over when someone was jumping in the car.

another friend had a few ghost stories, which i couldnt be bothered telling.

my mum saw her father a few times (he died when i was young)

her sister saw someone...grandmother maybe? dont remember, that was when she was like 15...

Ghosts are real. It's either you have seen one or u havnt. Most ppl wont believe ya till they see one.

Incidently, i hate the ppl that fake ouji *sp* boards cause i beleive they work, and they make a joke of it - i believe they work and wont try them for that reason, u gotta know too much to do it safely.
bambi
ohhh dont get me started
hahaha
me an my mate have prolly the most wild imaginations ever... possibly we've seen ghosts, but really, i highly doubt it, but i'll believe until im proven otherwise... same with ufos but im not going to get started with my story... *strolls away*

Ive had weird experiences where ive woken up from sleeping and i can see things moving around my room but i cant talk or move

It freaks me out at times but i know it aint real.

Also im a sleep walker ive slept over mates houses and theyve caught me wandering around looking for smeone or something.

Once i went out the front with only a pair of undies on then i woke up and i realised where i was.

i put it too i have an overactive imagination or something.

Also sometime ill be sitting thinking of something say a car i havnt seen for ages and a few minutes later ittl drive past

Also i can sort of feel when ive won a comp or something i feel a feeling its hard to explain but i know ive won.

That's actually a medical condition called atonia. Normally when you dream (REM sleep)you are paralysed and this stops you acting out what you're dreaming (sleep walking is a disorder of this process)Atonia is the paralysis normally experience in REM sleep extending into the waking stages of sleep. Your mind is awake but your body is still asleep. The brain waves as you are drifing off to sleep/waking up and when you're dreaming are very similar. Often you'll start to wake up but still be paralysed and then go back into REM sleep while still semi concious and dream of being paralysed, trapped, attacked, pinned down or something like that. People often report a weight on their chest as part of the paralysis and their minds often fabricate the image of a person (ghost) holding them down. We all know how messed up and illogical dreams can be. When they're superimposed with a real event ( being 'awake' in your bed) it can be scary and if you're inclined to believe in ghosts or the paranormal then that's what your mind will generate.

In case you're wondering, I work in a sleep disorders laboratory where we monitor brain waves and all sorts of other cool stuff
Slappin Rex
That's pretty Funky. I never knew I was paralysed when I slept. I don't think I am comfortable with that idea.
Hyena
get used to it
you'd be less comfortable if you weren't. You'd rarely wake up in your bed if you werent paralysed and you'd injure yourself in the process.
GHT-251
Oh Just bloody Great

Is there anything to fix this "Medical Condition"

That would explain why when i was little id scream my head off when id wake up then id forget why i was screaming

Now im used too it though so i just blink my eyes or rub them or turn on a light and it goes away.

But i have on a fair few occasions woken up in place im not supposed to be.

EG once i woke up yelling at me mate saying "Move its gonna land on u and squash u!!" LOL

If thats the case i dont trust me self sleeping over a house with nice chikys who knows where i might end up

If you can rub your eyes or turn on a light then you're not really paralysed. As you say you can blink or try wiggling a toe or finger to snap you out of it.
It sounds like you're experiencing both ends of the spectrum - both being paralysed when you're supposed to be awake and being and unparalysed when you're asleep. There's not alot you can do, unless you've got narcolepsy or soemthing where you just drop off to sleep out of the blue.

i dont trust me self sleeping over a house with nice chikys who knows where i might end up
ooooow, how did that get in there. Sorry, it's this condition I have...

Why is it that if something happens to someone that they can't explain, it's automatically "ghosts" or "spirits" or some divine power that is merely a figment of your imagination?

hey pplz

i deff belive in sprits ect, ect. have had a few weird encounters. anyways. ill tell of the one that stands out to me.

my uncle lives in woop woop, its a town called rupanyip or sum damm cr@p. so anyways my grans wants to visit him, so being the nice guy i am i offer to drive her up. my gran owns a house next door to my uncles, it bloody old and she bought it wen the previous owner died. so we were goin to stay there. that night i must of had a crap load off caffene of sumthin i ended up goin to bed really late. im lying in bed and i can hear this really faint mumbleing noise, it didnt bother me that much. the thing that bothered me, was this hardcore feeling off being not wanted in the room. i do alot of meditation with marital arts, and the feeling i had was so overwhelming i turned on the light, thought i was being stupid and decided to read ralph for a while, did that, turned off the light. 2 mins later same **** but louder and stronger. i bite my lip turn on the light and read 4 a while again. now this time i turn off my light, the noise starts again. im lying there concentrating on this noise and all of a sudden at the end of my bed it feels like sumone grabs my foot. i **** my pants, grad my blanket and slept in the lounge. next day i tell my uncle expecting him to laugh, he tells me the guy my gran got the house off carked it in the bloody place, in his bedroom. which was the room i was in. same bloody bed furniture ect. i didt go back. sleept at my uncles.

there my story sorry for the long read, im sure you all think i was hitting the wacky tobacy but i know wat i felt and it scared the crap outt me.

I have read up on this "condition" and it has happened to me before. It is the scariest thing that's happened and pretty much occured EXACTLY how you've described it. I remember dreaming something very vivid, when suddenly I became concious of my surroundings and knew that I was dreaming. I remember "waking" up from this dream, but I COULD NOT MOVE A MUSCLE, and most frighteningly couldn;t control my breathing. Felt like a huge weight was on my chest, you want to breath, but you haveto wait until your body does it automatically. You eventually snap out of it but When this happened to me I thought I was dying...
Miss_Corsa
Wow, I didn't know that atonia was a medical condition, it happens to me all the time, but somehow I managed to learn to shake it off whenever it happens.
