Well here it is.. some back to back tests of the previous Odyssey champion versus the new.
1500: Renamed the 1700 for 2005 & onwards, and re-badged by Stinger as the Stinger 1700. 1700 Peak Cranking amps.. 950CCA. A battery with a long and respected history. G31 size and suits most cars. SAE binding posts, sealed, AGM.
2150: The successor to the 1500's heritage. Rebadged by Stinger as the Stinger 2150 (funnily enough). 2150 Peak Cranking amps.. 1200CCA. Just inside the dB Drag 800 inch^2 limit, its an N87 truck size battery and will be a very tight squeeze in any car. Threaded rod screwdowns, sealed, AGM.
Test system:
Festiva
Wall
2x 15"s
JBL Crown 6000
The amp is calibrated to make max power when the HU's on V34.
So, results:
V28:
1500 = 148.8dB & 9.5V (2 second burp & protect)
2150 = 149.3dB & 12.1V (3 second burp)
V29:
1500 = 0dB & 9.5V (Less than 1 second burp & protect, so no reading)
2150 = 149.8dB & 11.9V (3 second burp)
Thats it. Can't exactly test back to back any higher 'cos the 1500 isn't delivering the juice.

wow a hald dB increase between batteries. impressive. price??

1700 RRP $450
2150 RRP $600
Its interesting to note the Supercharge XGA 950CCA delivers the same results as the 1500, but is N87 size.. its also a $200 battery.

Can't wait for my 2150 to arrive... Got any idea on current draw of the various tests?

LOL! You're right there.. I'm thinking I should be seeing about the same results as I'm droping to about the same voltage. What was the starting voltage (fully charged)?

I've only cycled it 6 times. After re-running 4 earths, 2 under chassis, making buzz bars, and getting it to fit, I wasnt in the mood to do much more work on the car.
Initial results before the cycling weren't very good to be honest. It would only float @ 12.8V to start with ! After a few cycles it went up to 13.5V, thats when I recorded these results.
This morning it was floating at 13.98V, thats after a good trickle charge all night.
The 1500 floats at 13.6V, and floated at 13.8V when I first got it and cycled it.

what does it mean by cycling it?

i think cycling it is like drain it and then scare the crap out of it and run big current and like 15V thru it.

Cycling is running a battery down to 0% capacity (either in one hit or over a period of time) and then charging it back up again.
If you run it down to 50% one time then charge it, then run it down to 80% then charge it, then run it down to 70% then charge it, the above "lost power" (50 + 20 + 30) adds up to 100% which is one full cycle.
So draining a battery all the way to zero voltage and then doing a full recharge (doesn't need to be at a massively fast rate) will count as one cycle also.

The American's call it Training. I call it, I spent an hour on the phone to EnerSys tech guy and he explained to me how to charge the battery properly. Which is, charging on 14.8V the battery will hit 14.8V but thats only 90% capacity. Trickling it with a slightly lower voltage & lower amperage will saturate it. When the battery hits 15.3V its 100% capacity.
14.8V is the highest Odyssey's will take without starting to boil the battery.
Cycling is giving it a taste of what its future life will be like.. saturate, burp, saturate, burp, etc. Final floating volatge of this battery increased 7V after the break in period.
Poisoner: Not for $200 it aint sealed or maintainance free. Its a fully vented wet type battery that needs to have the fluids checked and topped up every so often. But still, it'll fit most rides and as noted, returned the same results as the 1500.

i guess u cant expect much for 200 but to me thats seems like siginicatnly larger capacity batt than the others aroudn the same price.
itll fit in my tonner i can fit 2 truck batteries in the engine bay if i chose 2.
tell me... do you kno if its ok 2 do this cycle thing 2 normal batteries? or will it only wreck them. whats voltage is 0% 0V???

Normal batteries have a significantly reduced life span / ability to hold voltage if they are ever deep cycled. You can still run a big stereo off one of these batteries, but be wary if you are pushing a lot of power and burping for SPL, or if you plan on using your stereo for a prolonged period with the engine off.
Both of these activites will take a large hit out of the battery's capacity; deep cycles' can withstand significantly more discharges than a regular battery.

Typically a battery is considered "flat" (0% capacity) when its float voltage is 11.5V. Only a deep cycle battery (Optima YT or the Odyssey's for example) will handle being taken to this state of discharge regularly.
Mind you thats float voltage, which is sitting without a load on it after a half hour cool down from any load (charge or discharge) being applied to it. During SPL burps you'll see your voltage come right down then go back up, thats normal.
I wouldnt recommend fully discharging any battery then recharging it, it'll impact on its life. When I say cycle I mean charge, saturate, burp, charge, saturate, etc.

The Final Test Result: BlackIce has way too much free time as he always complains about his last minute rush jobs on sub boxes for comps, but if steve doesnt work a alnighter before a comp it just wouldnt be steve.

No really good to see someone doing the hard work mate.

Well somebodies gotta share the knowledge otherwise Aussie SPL will be left in the dark ages.
Final Result: 2150 is the shizzle

Mine just keeps getting better with more cycling

Mine arrived the other day.
So you're still charging, trickle charging, burping, charging, trickle charging, burping, etc. etc.
How are you trickle charging it?

Oh that reminds me, the guys said you should definitely have yours by now

hahaha I guess they were right.
I'm keeping a close eye on the multimeter and use the trickle mode in my charger when she hits 14.8V
