Full Version: 3 Way Active - Which amp setup?

As in the description, I'm going to be running a set of DLS UP36's off a Audiocontrol DXS 3 way active crossover, all fed from a JVC AVX2 H/U.

Now, I can't decide on which amp config to go for. I've just had an Idea that if I've got 2x DLS CA31's, I can possibly (need to check size in car) under each front seat, and run a woofer from channel C, and mid's and tweets from A & B, or go a CA23 for the woofers, and a CA41 for the mids & tweets.

Its all going in an AU falcon sedan. Sub is yet to come, I've gotta pay for all this stuff yet biggrin.gif

My boss (car audio retailer) thinks might be a pita to level match and adjust the two CA31 to each other, but ?? Price isn't really a concern, its only slighty cheaper with the CA23+CA41 combo.

I plan on making a custom fibreglass a pillar mounts for the mids & tweeters, and have the woofers in the original door position (possible remake the door trim and mount in a pod like part).

Ideas?

I can really tell you which of the amps to use specifically, I don't have much experience with them,
as long as it has plenty of power (100w+ per speaker) and plenty of damping it should be bloody awesome biggrin.gif

As for the positions, the stock AU and BA falcon door positions are Awesome, because they are equal distance from the tweeter mounting position, which is especially useful when you don't have individual time alignment capabilitys. The bummer is the AU is probably more difficult to make pods for, since that park of the door skin can't be easily removed like it can on the BA door Skins.. but I'm sure you already know that and have a good idea worked out biggrin.gif

I know my Focal K2p's didn't fit in the stock positions of my BA doors by about a inch or more LOL, so yeh custom door pod for me.

Oh yeh, wats wrong with putting the amps in the boot? want shorter cables?
Amps are generally such a bitch to fiddle with the adjustments under seats..

Good luck, should be bloody awesome when your done. smile.gif

Cool.

Wasn't specifically looking to put them under the seats, just another idea I though of. The speakers are on order, so when we get them in I'll play around with the woofer in the stock location, see if I can get it in ok.

Well with the amps, I have these two choices:
2x DLS CA31 (3 Channel ea.)
1x 170wrms - woofer's
2x 65wrms - mids & tweet's

1x DLS CA41 (4 Channel) 1x DLS CA23 (2 Channel)
4x 70wrms - both mids & tweet's
2x 135wrms - both woofers

All 3 amps have damping >100 according to website.

Tell your boss to buy a handheld Oscilloscope and it will be easy as pie to level set. smile.gif (only about $400-1000 and a VERY valuable tool to have in the workshop)

As far as setup for the amps goes, this is how I would normally reccomend doing it-

Woofers- most power
Mids- something in the middle (makes sense huh tongue.gif )
Tweets- least power

I used to have a set of Focal 3 ways, this is how I would have run them fully active (I ran them pasively because I didn't have enough amplification available) Woofers 150wrms per channel, mids 75wrms per channel and tweets 35-50wrms per channel.

Remember this type of setup will dramatically affect how the speakers can sound, it is like a big EQ, you can emphasize the ammount of midbass or the ammount of midrange or treble dramatically by your amp selection.

The more powerful the amp for the tweeters relative to the midrange and the midbass (woofers) the brighter it will sound.

The more power you give to your midbass(woofers) the more midbass you will get.

It is all pretty much common sense, get the most headroom (reserve amp power capability) you can and level set everything very conservatively.

PM me if you need more advice

I would go with the CA31 and CA23 as you discribed.

If money i no object then whu not consider
1 x RA40
1 x RA20

What are you doing for subs?

If your going classic series then CAD11 or CAD15, grab some end caps and they will tie in nicely for the instal.

Interesting, I guess Focal may be different from Morel. In Morel Elate 6 3-Way, the technical spec are as follow:

Elate SW Woffer - Power handling:180W / Max Power:1000W
MT23 tweeter - Power Handling:130W / Max Power:350W
CDM-54 midrange: Power Handling:100W / Max Power:300W

It seems Morel tweeters required more power than mids.

Not sure about require more power it’s more likely they have a lower sensitivity.

Either way in an active 3 way set-up 160rms x 75rms and 50rms is a pretty good place to start, should get most 3 way sets moving pretty well with that sort of power.

That’s what I like about DD’s C4 amp, more powerful outputs on the rear channels for midbasses or bridging for a sub…
