Just a quick msg to let ppl know how awesome the iRiver mp3 players sound Id read that if you were after sound quality that these where probably the best on the market, and having bought one I have to agree it sounds amazing. But it only has a normal output jack so if you want an output other then just plain headfone jack stick to an iPod, but if you are only after a mp3 player to carry around then they are an awesome piece of gear.

wouldn't touch one over an ipod.

If you are after sound quality your shouldn't be listening to mp3...
Luke352
You dont say!!!!! the point I was making was if you are after something to carry around at the gym etc.....and no i dont listen to mp3's any other time, my HU doesnt even play mp3 format. The only advantage of iPods is there extra output plug not sure what they call it which gives you an output other then a standard jack. But I cant see whats wrong with the iRiver it has been a popular brand in most reviews, not a lot of features but I was extremely surprised by how good it actually sounded when I first used it, I heard a lot of detail I hadnt heard before in songs.
k_p
what are they worth? if you dont mind me asking..

Ever heard the phrase 'ipod snob'?

If I was looking for an MP3 player I'd definately be looking at all options, especially the iRiver. Who wants to have something the same as everyone else.

Glad you like it Luke352, There's one on special at DSE at them moment. I might have to go in and have a look.

My Girlfriend purchased the 1GB version on the weekend. I really like it.
I wouldn't buy an I-Pod ever. I personally just don't like them.
Good little screen, can detect what sort of battery you have in there (Rechargeable or not), has FM radio, voice recorder, nice size. blah blah blah. She's pretty wrapped with it.

I would get one, but I already have an I-Mate Jam with a 1GB card in it.

HAHA thats it exactly who wants something the same as everyone else, we'd all be driving commodores or falcons if that was the case. Probably the main reason I didnt get the Ipod is its just one of those stupid, its cool to have one trends. Not saying there not a good product they are but are they the best hard to say do they suit everyone definitely not.
Boxie
does the iRiver play FLAC or OGG files?

I am thinking about getting a larger collection of music into the car at lossless encoding rates... any idea?

Hey Boxie, have a look here:
http://www.iriver.com/html/product/prpa_product.asp?pidx=42
This is the model I used to have (had to sell so I could get my iPod for my car sad.gif ), sure does play ogg and im pretty sure it plays flac with the upgraded 1.30e firmware.
Either way, iRiver > iPod any day, everyone should know this by now.

ohh, please.....

---save me! the dribble from people saving $50 on imitation products is pathetic. Car audio people, i would have thought to be the people that realise if you're going to do something do it right. Trend? maybe, Best? almost definately, Suits everyone? well no, some people will always look for 2nd best.---

Are you saying that Ipods where the first portable mp3 player, if I remember correctly portable mp3 players where available for quite some time before Ipods showed up, and how do you know iRiver is a rip off of the Ipod name for all you know they may have been around before Ipod and Ipod used a change of the name for there product. But I agree in car use Ipod is your best bet, when not using in a car I dont think Ipod's would be the best, one of the top 5products maybe but best its to subjective. Would you also only like one brand of HU one brand of speaker etcc... because no one thought to copy/make there own version which may have been better and possibly cheaper, if companies never did that you would always be paying top price and consistently getting under developed products. Seems pretty obvious to me. Just did some quick research the iRiver company was introduced and started developing digital music devices in 1999, the Ipod was introduced in 2001, so which company is copying the other now, seems Apple where the ones doing the imitation product to me. So before you come out with the Ipod is king everyone copied it, it might pay to do the research first and check before you accuse other companies of copying them and there name.

hmm, maybe, but seeing apple already had the, emac, imac and ibook released prior to that, i might take a stab in the dark and say the ipod was a name next in the sequence

blah, establishment and release dates two different things, who cares,..... "seems Apple where the ones doing the imitation product to me" sure.. only with design, integration, practicallity and success, sound like a copy to me.

Im over this conversation if you want to think that Ipods are the best player on the market go do that. While your at it you can also only buy Falcons, Pioneer Hu's and maybe Focal speakers forget the rest hey because you think there best so they must be because it would be rubbish to believe another company can produce something of similar quality and practicality. Open your eyes look at what other products are available. You never know you might try one of them and like it "shock horror."
k_p
mate if you want to argue about cars hu and speakers that is another topic! I was just putting my point forward seeing everyone wanted to have a go at the ipod, i thought it nessecary to support it... I'm probably never going to warm to an iriver mate, but you obviously see worth that i dont.

Can i just say, iPods are popular for a reason. Apple clearly have the market share, for a reason. They are brilliant. Everyone has one, because they are the best around.

I had an iRiver, it got me through Europe .. It copped a beating.. I've now got a 60gb iPod video that i'm very pleased with.

The missus has an iRiver H10 20gb that she is pleased with, But i prefer the software of the iPod.. The scroll wheel is easier to use than the iRivers Touchpad..

She likes the iPod more than her iRiver, for its size differences .. better display and the scroll wheel and software/menus and that she can watch Video/Movies on it..

Either way, the iPod can interface with my head unit in the car (AVH-7550MP) and i've got full control.. The iRiver cant. smile.gif

No you weren't. Have a read of the first post again. This is just someone saying how much they enjoyed the product they just bought. You turned it into an arguement.

Yeah...and a great deal of it has to do with marketing. Its amazing how people will believe something without questioning it or making an informed decision themselves.

In my opinion, buy what you like, tell everyone how good it is but you only look like a fool trying to put-down something for no valid reason.

Untill you entered the conversation all i said was that i prefered the ipod, go back and read up to where you (unfortunatelly) started talking. What part do you play in this conversation anyway seeing;

Go do the reseach buy your choice then come speak. Untill that point dont expect anyone to credit your imput.

Getting a bit messy now isn't it. Time to grow up k_p.

What part do I play in this conversation??? Last time I looked, this was on a public forum. If you don't want other people to contribute you should have PM'd. I was reading someones review, appreciated it and decided to contribute.

If you thought you only said you preferred the ipod you need to brush up on your reading and writing skills or the majority of those who have read this topic have misinterpreted you. There are ways you can present your opinion constructively. You decided to present your opinion and put $hlt on someone else for their opinion.

As with Luke352, I'm done with this conversation. I've got more important things to do. Continue posting if you want but try to talk some sense next time.

Interesting thread....

Thought i might add my 2 cents, considering i just read the whole thread in one go....

Im not going to take sides or diss any product, but I own an Iriver because I personally think they suit my style.

I looked at ipods, irivers's and all the other brands that make them and by the end of the day the Iriver was a little more expensive though it impressed me the most.

The ipod is good, though to me it lakes sound quality compared to the iriver (personal evaluation). The scroll wheel on the ipod gave me the craps! I was always scrolling past what i wanted to click on and the the general setup wasn't how i wanted it to be.

My H10 comes with everything i want, 5GB harddrive, colour screen, displays pictures, all sorts of music, but not video (who wants to carry video arond with them?). I don't have any intentions of connecting my Harddisk MP3 player to a headunit, though it does have the necessary output for the application.

So there, my opinion has been posted, deal with it however you like, just don't whin like a baby or make crude insulting remarks.....its not grade 6 in here. Well i hope not laugh.gif

Later...

Another iRiver fan here.

I picked up a 20gb H10 last weekend and love it... it was the best all-rounder IMO.

It's also great not having to install iTunes ( yahoo.gif ) then copying my music library over to it...

Everyone stop buying CRAP!!!! (iPod)

http://news.zdnet.com/2036-2_22-6035707.html

I refuse to buy anything with the level of DRM apple uses on principle alone.
