Hey, i'm having troubles wiring up my new headunit smile.gif Pioneer 6850, now i've taken off the whole console and removed the old cheapo headunit (clarion) that was in there. I have a good idea of basic electronics and i was hoping this would pull me through....but it didn't tongue.gif Now the old clarion head unit used a white clip(bare with me here:P) but didn't fit my new head unit...so snip snip smile.gif Now the old one was currently working so i followed the same colour coding as the last installer. soldering on the new clip, i connect everything up as you think u would...battery to battery...so on, now

1.two purple, two green, one of each has a black stripe, plugs into 1. in second photo.
2.Big Yellow = battery, Red = ACC, Black = ground, yellow plugs into fuse with big orange wire in 2., Red connects to little yellow
3.two white, two grey, one of each has black stripe...these are speaker ones ?tongue.gif
4.assorted unknowns... Blue = System Remote Control, Orange = ILL? thin Yellow = mute

1.4 random plugs last installer put in...
2.Big orange = battery with fuse in it, Yellow = ACC
3.speaker cable(front)
also in this picture is the speaker cable(rear) and the radio jack, and the blue "system remote control" cable

when i plugged in i got nothing.... tongue.gif so i switched around the green and purple and still nothing...i didn't have much of a fiddle...but i'm just wondering if i'm doing anything obviously wrong....

and i think i blew a fuse... i was wondering if i was still actually getting power(no voltmeter around sad.gif) and just hit the ground and acc togeather and heard a pop over near the fuse box tongue.gif

so yeah...kinda vague post...but if anyone can help me tongue.gif
Audio Express
last point is probably your problem... two fuses in there.

Plus standard VP commodore wiring doesnt correspond to the aftermarket wiring of your new headunit.

Did you just try to match up colours or actually tested what the wires do before you went and started connecting stuff.

the clarion headunit was fairly recent(even though i said old tongue.gif)...as in someoone had hacked up the original one and changed it...I'll have a better look tomorrow...what kinda volts am i looking for ?

As for the fuse responce, which one do i take out ? :|

where can i find a wiring diagram for the adaptor for the vp ?
Audio Express
for teh fuses - look in the panel - two will be marked radio.
as for the wiring plug - any audio store. though by the sound of it you need more than this to fix your problem...

okies, grabbed the voltimeter today and found the 12v line, which was the one i already had.....but checking the headunit it has like 14.4v=ground written on it :| ?

anyway I replaced the fuse in the box under the steeringwheel and continued on my way... tongue.gif still nothing yet...

so i guess my next problem is the 12v/14.4 issue.. ?
Stone
12/14.4v is not an issue. Car battery is 12v, car alternator tries to produce 14.4v so that it will charge the battery. So your car is 12v when off and 14v or so when running.

ah ok tongue.gif

I'm still clueless as to what is wrong...=/ I hope this headunit isn't broken sad.gif

my brother gets here on thursday tongue.gif i'll let him have a look at it biggrin.gif

i dont no if this has been said yet as i just skimmed over wat every one else has said but for the head unit to even turn on it needs the acc power,u obveiously got the constant 12v from the battery so thats a good start.if the old deck worked it will have a acc power wire attached to it somewhere so turn the ignition to acc power and test the wires with the volt meter(be carful not to touch any thing to the metal body,as u already learned) once u find a 12v or so power lead turn the ignition off and make sure the power disapears from the wire.if it does theres ur acc power.most brands do not! follow the same colour codes, the power wire colour codes are generally the same through diff makes of head units.car wiring is a totally diff story they change dramatically through out diff models so always test every thing before u wire it up.once uv got ur constant 12v, acc 12v and the ground conected up plug the head unit in and see if it powers up,if nothing check the fuse in the bak on the head unit and if the other fuses in the car are stil fine chek all wiring again.once ur head unit is powering up fine u can test the speaker wires, figure out which one is wat and then ur set.

AFTER YOU HAVE FOUND THE WIRES... DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WHEN WORKIN ON THE CAR! ALWAYS!.

why would u.just do a wire at a time
Lunatic_Mirage
There's always the chance that you could accidentally touch a 12V wire to earth even if you only do one at a time wink.gif
georgeonboost
i recently put a headunit in a VP.

Orange with white tracer = constant 12v
Black (could be with white tracer) = ground (although, make a new 1)
i think that the yellow one is the accessories 12v (may have a red tracer)

just check with a multimeter before you go and connect everything up.

Well it's working now.. tongue.gif

I had all the right cables...But it took my brother to get it working...even though he didn't change anything =/

oh well tongue.gif thanks for everyones help tongue.gif
Liberate
Search on Google for the cars wire colours and then you'll know if you have wired it up correctly.

dogo,

that is a US site and if I'm correct commodore isn't in their vocabulary. ( mind you it is a GM product and some are 'close'
